Theodore Pounders Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Aug. 20, 2008.
Theodore (Ted) H. Pounders Jr., 76, of Muscle Shoals, Ala., passed away Monday, Aug. 18, 2008, after a brief but valiant battle with cancer.

Visitation will be 6-8 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 20, 2008, at Colbert Memorial Chapel. The funeral service will be at 2 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 21, 2008, at Colbert Memorial Chapel. Burial will be in Colbert Memorial Gardens. Brother David Rushlow will be officiating.

Ted was born in Sheffield, Ala., and graduated from Sheffield High School. From high school, he enlisted in the U.S. Army and served his country in Korea. He was awarded the Purple Heart for his service in Korea.

When he returned home from overseas, he attended Florence State (UNA) and was eventually employed by Reynolds Metals Co. for 25 years.

Along the way, he turned to politics. Ted was elected and served as mayor of Muscle Shoals for two consecutive terms in the early '60s. During the same period of time, Ted and his wife Merle founded and operated Muscle Shoals Sporting Center, a sporting goods and boat dealership that operated for more than 20 years. After working hard during his early life, Ted retired early and became quite attracted to investing in the stock market. He always had a stock tip for his friends. He had many friends and never met a stranger.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Theodore H. Pounders Sr.; a sister, Dorothy O'Donley; and a brother, James (Jimmy) Pounders.

He is survived by his daughter, Lisa Cottam and husband, Vincent, of London, England; son, Gregg Pounders and wife, Kim, of Killen, Ala.; grandchildren, Ashlyn and Collin Pounders, of Killen, Ala.; stepgranddaughter, Nicola Cottam, of New Zealand; sisters, Doris McNulty, of Muscle Shoals, Ala., and Jeanne Ellis, of Ringgold, Ga.; nieces and a nephew.

Pallbearers will be Boyce Nesbitt, Randle Perkins, Jack Kanupp, Kevin Kanupp, Tommy Holmes and Hoyte Carver. Honorary pallbearers will be Bob Rogers, Matt Holden, Buddy Johnsey, Glenn Sherrod, Mark Kassels and Charles Elam.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to be made to Southeastern Diabetes Education Services, 500 Chase Park, Suite 104, Birmingham, AL 35244, or to Hospice of the Shoals.

Special thanks to all of Ted's friends who kept a check on him and his family. Thanks to the staff at Shoals Hospital, J.W. Sommers Rehab unit, Dr. Kayfan, Dr. Shukla and to Dr. Hagler. Thank you to Hospice of the Shoals and Elder Care for the compassion and care shown by their staff.

My sincere sympathy to Lisa, Gregg and all the Pounders family. Coincidentally, I had just been inquiring about Lisa a few days ago. It's been along time but I have many fond memories of all you.

Mr. Pounders was a very sweet and interesting man. I was privileged to meet him and he showed me his wonderful collections and shared lots of knowledge. He meant so very much to my Mom (Helen) and sister (Lisa). They more than enjoyed cleaning his home for him. He was truly their friend as well. They loved him and respected him. They shared some wonderful memories and will always treasure the good times. My daughter and niece loved Mr. Pounders too. When they were out of school and accompanied my Mom and sister to clean Mr. Pounders they always came home telling me about him and what they had done. My nephew would go out by the river with him also occassionally to fish on these visits. Mr. Pounders was always willing to share some good business tips or lunch. I appreciate so much the impact he had on my Mom and sister during the past couple of years. He was much more than an employer to them, he was a special friend. Our prayers are with the whole Pounders family during this time of sorrow. We feel sure our sweet Mr. Pounders will be waiting inside Heaven's gates for our arrival one day. God bless all of the Pounders Family in the coming months !!

I was terribly upset when I got to work tonight and heard of Mr. Pounders passing. I enjoyed caring for him and getting to know his family while he was here at J. W. Sommers rehab. I am sorry that we didn't get to have the barbecue like we talked about. My love and sincere sympathy goes out to all of you. You will all be in my thoughts and prayers.
With Love,
Sherry

Although my opinion may be biased, my Uncle Ted was truly a wonderful person. Like all of us, he had his short-comings as an individual, but he more than made up for his with an outgoing personality. The good times we enjoyed are to many to mention, but will always be too short due to his passing. Football season will never be the same without his opinion(s). I wish the best to his family, and will be thankful to "Uncle Ted" for the memories. God Bless. Jack Ellis
