Theodore Sawchuck Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Sep. 28, 2015.
Sawchuck, Theodore Jacob ("Ted")
1923-2015

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Ted Sawchuck, loving husband, father and "TeeJay" to his grandson.
Born in Calgary, Ted attended Crescent Heights High School followed by Normal School. He then taught before joining the Royal Canadian Air Force, where he served as a pilot. He attended the University of Alberta, graduating with a Batchelor of Education, and went on to earn a Master of Science degree from Washington State University. He became a teacher and also coached basketball and football at the senior level in Edmonton. He went on to further studies that resulted in a Master of Education (in administration.) He became an Assistant Principal at Ross Sheppard High School and went on to be Principal of Eastglen High, then Jasper Place High, at that time the largest high school in Western Canada. After being in the School Board office in Edmonton, where he helped select principals and administrators, Ted had an opportunity to move to Victoria in 1970 and join the Faculty of Education at University of Victoria. As the university grew in student population he proceeded to guide Student and Ancillary Services department until his retirement.
Ted found helping people in an enjoyable place most invigorating and rewarding. He was always looking for new ideas and ways of doing things. While a high school principal in Edmonton, he was an innovator, and was loved by his students because he trusted them to make the right decisions. While at UVIC, he passionately supported the athletic and recreation programs, and helped build the foundation for what is now the Vikes athletic program. Upon retirement, he was elected president of the Uplands Golf Club, and presided over the re-building of the clubhouse into a modern facility. Ted's determination was always evident, but was always coupled with a warmth and respect for others.
Ted is survived by Carmen, his loving wife of 63 years, son David (Diane), son Lanny (Tina), and his beloved grandson Carter.
A private family gathering will be held at a later date. Flowers gratefully declined and condolences may be offered to the family at www.firstmemorialfuneral.com.

The passing of Ted came as quite a shock to me Carmen. The last time we spoke, Ted was doing quite well. I was always thankful for Ted and you when he would make a point of asking me if I would like Salmon from your son's fishing expeditions. we also formed a better friendship when my good friend, Sean was able to rent a parking spot from you and Ted. My Mom and Dad (Mary and Doug Longman) were great friends of both of you and I know you and Ted were good friends while living in Mariner's Landing. My heart goes out to you Carmen and will remember Ted as a wonderfully kind, gentle person who cared for other's as much as he did for you Carmen and your family. Please accept my sadness to you. I had the pleasure and honour of being a student of Mr. Sawchuck in grade 6 at Sherbrooke as well. He was and continued to be my "Hero" after all these years. I had kept in touch with him over these many years. And on his birthday I would contact him. He is always in my thoughts and in my heart. To his family, you are so blessed to have a such a wonderful husband, dad and grandpa. Blessings to all.

I also was lucky enough to have him guide me through Sherbrooke School in Edmonton. I moved with family to BC and in later years I was many times able to confirm his guidance, words, and thoughts with him as I worked at BC Ferries and he rode on our ships. I continued to learn and he continued to teach. Such a grand guy!.

Mr. Sawchuk was my grade 6 teacher at Sherbrooke in Edmonton. When our grade went on to Ross Sheppard he was our grade Coordinator.
Often in life we get asked who our favorite teacher was or who has influenced your life. I never had any trouble answering it was Mr Sawchuk ... He was simply the best for so many reasons. I thank him for his significant contribution to my life

Ted was a long-time and much-loved member of the Rotary Club of Victoria. It was an honour and a privilege for us all to know Ted, a true gentleman in the old-fashioned sense.
