Theodore (Ted) Martin Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Sep. 21, 2023.
Theodore (Ted) Martin was born 10 November 1928 in Ossining, NY, the son of Louis Edward Martin and Henrietta Viola Burris. Ted graduated to Heaven 13 September 2023 in Mesa, AZ at the age of 94.

Ted married his High School (Sharon Springs, NY) sweetheart, Betty Jane Collins on 6 September 1947 and together they had two sons, Terence Alan in 1954 and Steven Craig in 1959. He was married to Betty for 71 years until Betty predeceased him on 15 November 2018.

He served his country from 1955-1957, entering the US Army's Signal Corps, and he was stationed on Seburi-Yami, near Itazuke Air Force base, Japan.

Ted was the first in his family to graduate from college (with a BS in 1965 from Syracuse University) and he did so while attending night school while working full-time for General Electric Company. Ted worked for Selkirk Hardware in Cobleskill, NY, General Electric in Utica, NY, IBM in Vestal, NY, Dayton, NJ, and ended his work career with IBM in Lexington, KY in 1989.

Ted became a devout Christian, serving his local church in many capacities as Deacon and Lay Minister with United Methodist Church in Lexington, KY. He continued to grow in his faith by daily Bible readings and devotionals, leading Bible Studies in his basement and long-term care facilities, visiting hospitals, and lending his extensive carpentry skills to various church projects.

He was an avid automobile fan, annually attending the Barrett-Jackson Auto Auction in Scottsdale, AZ with his two sons. Among his favorite things to eat were a good, juicy steak from anywhere, a pizza from Sal's Pizzeria in Hightstown, NJ, and Eggplant Parmesan from The Grotto in Princeton, NJ.

Ted was as a man of integrity that lived out "a man's word is his bond' in everyday living. One tangible way this was shown was through his dedication to the care of his wife Betty as her health declined. ("I made a commitment for 'in sickness and in health' and I mean to do it.").

He had a dry sarcastic sense of humor that occasionally was taken the wrong way by those that didn't know him well, but entertained and amused those of us that did.

Ted was also known and respected as a man that had an open mind who could have discussions with others that did not hold the same beliefs while leaving the other feeling that they were being heard and loved but not judged.

He is survived by his two sons, Terence Alan Martin and Steven Craig Martin, their spouses Linda and Robin, together with 4 grandchildren - Lauren Pinion (Timothy Chase Pinion), Nicole Filipe (Nuno Ricardo Filipe) & Rachel and Andrew Martin, plus 3 great-grandchildren (Amelia & Lucas Pinion and Nadia Filipe).
