Theresa Humes-Thomassin Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers from Jun. 29 to Jun. 30, 2010.
OBITUARY THERESA HUMES-THOMASSIN (nee Dawson) Peacefully called home to Our Lord, surrounded by her children - on June 28, 2010, in her eighty-fifth year - dearly beloved wife of the late William George Humes and late Georges Henri Thomassin, loved daughter of the late Gertrude Fyfe and Fabian Dawson. Very loving and precious mother of Nancy (Ted), David (Johanne), Cathy (Terry), Susan, John Flynn, Bill (Lynne), Michael (Julie), Carol Brophy, Boo, Chas Guay, Brian (Colleen), Jennifer (Brian), John (Pamela) and Theresa (Derek). Cherished grandmother to Ted, Christina (Julien), Maria, Matthew (Tanya), Kimberley, Justin, Kristian (Laura), Brian (Karen), Tara (Greg), John-Michael, Tracey-Leigh, Alec, Cathy, Peter, Richard, Eric, Adam, Megan, Davis, Lilli, Lindsay, Spencer, Erin, Tess, Brian, Jonathan, Meaghan, Leah, Willy, Alana, Sarah, Malcolm, Grace and Lara. Precious great-grandmother to Taylor, Oscar, Hugo, Anna, Sarah, Noah, Charlie, Will, Cate, Connor, Nathan, Emily, Lukas, Liam and Hunter. Loving stepmother to the Thomassin children: Michael (Terry), Linda (Pat), Bruce (Laurie), Paul (Patty), Gregg (Kelley) and grandchildren; Patrick (Ashley), Stephanie, Marie-Claire, Michelle (Ky), Anthony, Michael, Bryce, Hayden, Daniel, Caroline, Emily, Jenny-Lee, Sara, Louise, Michael and great-grandchildren; Logan & Rhys. Very loving sister to Anita (Ron), Frances (Jack), Ann (Dave), Gertrude (late Ernie), Fabian (Noella), Norman (Lynn), John, sisters-in-law Flora, Susan, Norma, Joyce and Laura, predeceased by eldest brother Richard (RCAF), James, Peter and youngest brother Richard. Theresa was indeed a "woman for all seasons". Not only was she a natural athlete, an accomplished artist, gifted singer, always with a song in her heart and an exceptionally hard working individual, she was truly a mother extraordinaire. Her greatest talent was as a Mother. Mom had an amazing ability to make everyone she met feel like they were special. She was an outstanding mother and friend to her immediate families and all their friends, many of whom adopted her as their own. She had a tireless determination to give all that she had to her children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, siblings, and friends. Our home was always open to everyone and was known as a "Stranger's Resort". Infamous Sunday Roast Beef dinners for 20 or more were known to have the local clergy sitting amongst family and friends regaling the events of the day. Her warm welcome and acceptance of everyone made her the perfect host. Mom worked many years at the Loyola campus of Concordia, with the Campus Ministry office and the Recreation Department. Countless students, who called her "Mom", were able to rely on her love, wisdom and friendship as they moved through their formative adolescence and young adult years. In recognition of her relentless efforts to solidify the role of women's athletics she was named to the Concordia Sports Hall of Fame in 1997. In 1986, the world's longest running International Women's Hockey Tournament, begun in 1965, was renamed in her honour. The Concordia University Theresa Humes Award for Women's Hockey Endowment was established in 2005 by her family to facilitate the perpetual continuance of her efforts towards the youth of today and tomorrow. Theresa exuded a spiritual beauty that was evident to all. Aptly named for Saint Theresa of Lisieux (the Little Flower), who was canonized in the year of Mom's birth, she believed that it was in the "little ways" that she could best make a difference. She was a devout Catholic, who instinctively projected the best of Christianity - love, hope and charity, wherever she went. She was truly our "Mother Theresa". The family would like to thank most sincerely, in a very special way, Fr. Ernie Schibli, Dr. Gabriel Minz, Dr. Paul Saba, Dr. Bruce Thomassin, Dr. Michael Thomassin and the staff of the Lachine Hospital for the loving care shown to mom during the past few months. Also, we would like to gratefully thank all friends of mom and the family for their constant support, love and prayers, especially her family of friends on Vermont Avenue. Mom was deeply appreciative and humbled by the vast and heartfelt outpouring from all. Resting at Collins Clarke Funeral Home, 222 Highway 20 (Cartier exit 49), Pointe-Claire. Visitation will be Wednesday, June 30, 7 to 9 p.m. and Thursday, July 1, 2 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. A celebration of her life will be held at St-John Fisher Parish, 120 Summerhill Ave, Pointe-Claire, QC on Friday, July 2, 2010 at 11 a.m., reception to follow in the church hall. In lieu of flowers, Mom requested that donations be made for the marginalized who were forever close to her heart through the Social Justice Committee (e-mail [email protected]), 1857 de Maisonneuve Ouest, Suite 320, Montreal (QC), H3H 1J9 or Le Bon Dieu Dans La Rue, (e-mail [email protected]), 895 de la Gauchetiere Street West, Level 90, suite 220, Montreal (QC), H3B 5K3.

To all of Terry's family and friends.
Aunty Terry's visits to the Okanagan were always a very special time. I loved how excited my Mom, Ann would get knowing that her sister was arriving.
Aunty Terry was a very special aunt to me and I will remember her as the most loving person I have ever known.
Lucky are all of us who had the pleasure of knowing such a beautiful person.
She truly was an angel here on earth.
May wonderful memories of her live in your hearts forever, as they will in mine.

Aunty Theresa has always been a wonderful role model for me; from the time I fell off the dock at the cottage to the short but sweet phone calls; her loving voice always encouraged me. My heart goes out to all the Dawson clan and in particular my Humes cousins. I pray for peace in our hearts and I know Aunty Theresa is having a great time trying to hold all the babies in heaven at once.
Affectionately Yours,
Carol

To the Humes Family, my second family,

My heart goes out to you. Being physically separated from a person we love is not easy. On the other hand, through our love, faith and memories, her love for us and our love for her continues. This transition is a time to celebrate a persons life, accomplisments and new journey. Your mom has certainly had a full life and has touched many of us with her love and faith. May her loving energy carry on in all of our hearts and inspire us to be the light for each other.

You are in my thoughts and prayers and I will be with you in spirit on Friday.

Love to all of you,
Chantal

Growing up there were sleepovers at Aunt Terry's; getting to spend fun time with Jen and whoever else was living at home at the time. Being part of this big, wonderful loving family helped to make us all who we are today. Aunt Terry always made me feel like I was one of her girls and I will miss her. You are all in my thoughts and prayers as we celebrate her life.
Love to you all,

Auntie Terry was an amazing person and it was always a true pleasure to spend time with her. I was always in awe of the energy she had; she lived with the exuberance and zest for life of someone much younger in age. She had a "Beautiful Spirit" that was felt by all who had the pleasure to know her.

Our thoughts are with her family and friends.

Aunt Terry was such a wonderful person and a joy to be with. Whenever she visited us in British Columbia it was such a comfortable time and being with her made me feel connected and close to all of the family back east despite being away since 1967!. She made me feel like and be a better person when I was around her. I looked forward to her kind and supportive words as she spoke to me like she could see within me. I feel she was the "perfect example" of what we all could strive to be.

I am so sorry for your loss during this difficult period.
Love to her family and friends
