Thomas Amen Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on May 7, 2017.
Amen, Dr. Thomas Eugene
July 12, 1939 - April 15, 2017
Surrounded by his loving family, Dr. Thomas E. Amen passed away quietly in Mission Viejo, CA on the morning of April 15, 2017. He was 77 years old.
Born and raised in San Bernardino, CA, Dr. Amen graduated from the Southern California College of Optometry in 1964, and went on to open a number of successful practices in cities across Southern California, eventually settling in Mission Viejo, where he was the first optometrist in the city, and where he practiced continually for over 45 years.
In his private life, Dr. Amen was an avid golfer, cyclist, fisherman, sailor, snow-skier, and general fan of travel and the outdoors. However, Dr. Amen was most interested in people, and it is this quality above all others that has endeared him to so many. He was truly an exceptionally warm, friendly, funny, and engaging human being, and will be deeply missed by those fortunate enough to call him husband, father, doctor and friend.
Dr. Amen is survived by his loving wife of 57 years, Owena Amen; three adult children, Thomas Amen, Michael Amen and Julie Amen Stremel; and son-in-law, John Stremel. Dr. Amen also leaves behind numerous extended family members, and countless life-long friends and acquaintances.
Services will be private, but the family has asked that those wishing to express their appreciation for Dr. Amen's life and legacy do so by making a contribution in his name to PGA Junior League Golf.

As I wrote 2'years ago, you are very missed Dr. Amen......and family! I truly felt like I was "part of the family" and miss that very much. I hope your family is adjusting as well as they can, with such an amazing man missing in their life....how does one fill that void?

Always in my prayers and thoughts......Cindy Casey

This is a shock - just weeks ago I was thinking about him on his birthday (7-12)! My condolences to Owena and the family. I'll miss knowing he was there to assist with my eyecare! Been going to him since his office was in the Medical Building at LaPaz.

I am so, so saddened to just hear of Dr. Amen's death. My husband Craig just returned from seeing the Optometrist that now owns his shop. Personally, I loved the Amen family and friends that worked with Dr. Amen. He was a wonderful, caring, gentle soul that occasionally joked a bit And then his wife and daughter were awesome at assisting me in picking out my eyeglasses which I always was happy with! You are ALL missed and know that really.....I am deeply saddened by the loss of your husband, father and friend Lots of love and prayer......Cindy Casey

Dr. A was my first mentor and became a dear friend whose advice and guidance was very critical in my upbringing. He was a fun loving, life-loving person, a great father and man of grace and I miss him deeply. True Class Act, "King of the hill, A number One". With love and sympathy..
