Thomas W. Atherton Jr. age 67, died on Wednesday, August 26, 2020 at the Elliot Hospital in Manchester. He was born in Concord, NH on April 11, 1953, the son of the late Thomas W. Atherton Sr. and Elaine Fregosi. He worked for Pepsi for 41 years. Tom was an avid and accomplished runner, winning the New Englands in 1970 for Concord High School, the Conference Championship for Plymouth State, and setting his own personal record of running 10,328 days in a row (over 27 years). Tom was a proud bearer of the Olympic Torch in Kittery, ME as it toured the US before the 2002 Winter Games. His passion for running was infectious and he inspired many around him to run. Tom was a regular blood donor at the Children's Hospital in Boston, donating more than 10 gallons over the years. Tom will be sorely missed and remembered well by those who knew him for his unconditional love and desire to stay in touch, his listening ear, his positive outlook on life and his bad Dad jokes. He was truly a gift to this world. A Bedford resident for 40 plus years, Tom leaves behind his devoted wife of 41 ½ years, Linda (Durell) and their three sons and their spouses; Thomas W. Atherton III and his wife Nicole of Manchester, Daniel and his wife Kathleen of East Longmeadow, MA and Matthew and his wife Maura of Goffstown, grandchildren Olivia and Jackson and his brother Scott and sister-in-law Diane of Derry. Tom also leaves behind many other loving extended family members and dear friends. All are welcome to attend calling hours on Tuesday, September 1, 2020 at the Phaneuf Funeral Home, 243 Hanover St., Manchester, NH from 4:00PM-7:00PM. Tom will be interred privately at the Bedford Center Cemetery, Church Rd., Bedford, NH. In lieu of flowers, those wishing to make a memorial donation in Tom's name are encouraged to do so to the Blood Donor Center at Boston Children's Hospital, 333 Longwood Ave, Boston, MA 02115.

I have just heard about Toms passing, and although I do not personally know your family, I’ve lived in Bedford my whole life and remember the kids in the family thanks to McKelvie yearbooks. I am also a runstreaker—only 4.5 years in—and this tragedy breaks my heart. Please know the runstreak group on Facebook is sending their love and support during this difficult time. Tom is inspiring us all to keep running!!

Linda, Tom, Danny and Matt, Our Deepest condolences for the loss of your wonderful loving husband LInda and a great dad to his son's and granddad to the grand children. Our visits were way to short when we came back east, thou our visits were always wonderful doing catch up time. Spending time together and sharing in the news. My bro Tom had a wonderful gift of humor, and a smile that keeps everyone in the spirit of passing it on. Our passion for the "Red Sox" was given to us our dad taking us to FenWAy Park each summer and afterwards eating at Fishing Men's . We enjoyed his humor "You just can't get there from here". His love of life, family and friends and the memories we shared will forever remain with us.Again our Love to each of you and our deepest condolences. Our Love and Prayers go forth--Merridee and Dan ( or as Tom, would call me, "Semi sister"

Linda, Tom, Danny and Matt,
My deepest sympathies on Tom's passing. He was an absolutely incredible man and I am proud to have known him for a great portion of my life. Be it the times I was fortunate enough to be at your home or during fantasy football season, he always brought I smile to my face and undoubtedly to anyone who met him. All my love,

I'm so sorry to hear this news and send my deepest condolences. I was on the cross country team with Tom at Concord High School. When Tom won the State and New England championship races helping CHS win, it was an incredible inspiration for everyone on the team. It taught us to believe in ourselves and that anything is possible. It was a lesson that I (and I'm sure our other teammates, too) benefited from throughout life. Thank you Tom for giving us that wonderful gift, and RIP.

Mrs. Atherton, I would like to offer my condolences on the passing of Tom. The Athertons were our neighbors while I was growing up in Concord. A memory I have of Tom is that he once found a cat and gave it to me as my first pet. I was probably 5 or 6 and Tom was 12 or 13 at the time but I still fondly remember that small gesture of kindness. He was always nice to us "little kids" in the neighborhood. These memories have stayed with me for all of these years. Your family will be in my prayers.

In 1990 my family and I relocated from out of state to Bedford, N.H. Tom was one of my first aquantances. He became a good friend during the eight years we lived in Bedford convincing me to become a runner. We enjoyed many runs that were always filled with laughs prompted by his " unique" humor. We moved out of state in 1998. Tom remained a great friend with frequent communications right up to the day before his accident. I wil miss Tom, his jokes, kindness and his listening ear and just good old fashion fun. He always took the time to talk with my wife Carol and always asked about our three sons and their families, while keeping us up to date with his three sons as well. His dedication to family, friends and his employer's Pepsi brand was remarkable!!

There are few we meet, in a whole lifetime, that are of the quality of a Tom Atherton. There are few words that will do him justice here. We can only offer heartfelt sympathies to Linda, Scott, and the entire Atherton family, and that they will know how sorry we are to hear this tragic news. Great times were had at my parents house when we were growing up, when Tom stopped in. I taught him how to blow bubbles with baseball bubble gum while we all watched a movie (not a scary one!). He was so good about visiting with my mom and dad, and how they loved him! We saw Tom for a nice visit at Pleasant Lake a month ago. And now this. Love you, Tom and Linda. ❤

I can't tell you, Linda, Matt, Tommy and Danny, the profound sadness I feel after just learning of Tom's death. Although I haven't seen any of you for years, I will always remember the warm, welcoming feeling I always felt around all of you. The one thing that stands out so much in my heart was when Tom was my son, Jay's, Little League coach. Jay was having a "tough" year as a little guy, trying to get a hit. Tom never gave up on him, always encouraging him in every way. The day when Jay got his first hit, everyone stood and cheered and Tom gave Jay the game ball. It still brings tears to my eyes thinking of this kind, loving, gesture that meant so much to a little boy. Please know Jay, Jeff and I are thinking of all of you and send our deepest sympathies.

I worked with Tom at Pepsi. The very first thing I noticed about Tom was his smile and willingness to help anyone at any time. Although I left shortly after Tom started, We remained friends and always had things to share and laugh about when we ran into each in the following years . He truly was a friend you knew you could count on. He loved his family and community and and will be missed by all who knew him. R.I.P. Thomas.

Tom was a rival of sorts, a friend for real and a fixture at the annual Luti Race. Every twelve months the conversation would begin "is the streak still going?" until one year the answer was "no" ... and this Sunday's Union Leader news confirmed it. My sincere condolences to Tom's family. When we were young we were blessed to be around some very special people and the influence continues.

Tom was the love of my sister's life, and a devoted husband, father and grandfather. Would that we could have spent more time together; nevertheless we knew we were always in each other's hearts. I am so deeply saddened to learn of the great loss of Tom. He was for sure nothing less than a stand up guy. We were both worked for Pepsi many years ago. Always warm, kind, friendly, loyal, humble, gentle, sweet and a true gentleman. What touched me most about Tom that always brought the fondest memories of him throughout the years when he came to mind was how devoted he was to care for his mother who was alone. Deepest heartfelt sympathy to Linda and the family.

My parents and Linda's parents were best friends from her Indiana days and we would go to NH to visit occasionally. I'll always remember as a kid, Tom would let me ride along on his Pepsi delivery route. It was fascinating to me when we could swap a warm one for a cold one, . We couldn't get Orange Crush in Indiana then, and I think I drank enough to float a battleship that day! This world hasn't seen many men as good as Tom and he will be missed.
