Thomas Dalzell Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jul. 6, 2023.
Thomas "Tom" St Clair Dalzell, a lifelong devoted family man and passionate problem solver, passed away on July 3, 2023, at the age of 80 in Sacramento, California. He called Phoenix, Arizona home for nearly 65 years. Born on July 16, 1942, in Pasadena, California, Tom was the beloved husband of Gretchen Dalzell, the loving father of sons John and Scott, and their wives Mary and Errin. He cherished his grandchildren Cohen, Maggy, Taylor, and Morgan. Tom was preceded in death by his parents Edwin and Frances Dalzell, and brother Jim Dalzell.

Tom attended Judson School in Paradise Valley, Arizona, for high school and later pursued higher education at the University of Arizona. He embarked on a successful career in Commercial Industrial Real Estate, working for Coldwell Banker, serving as the President of Del Webb, and eventually establishing his own business, Dalzell Commercial Real Estate.

Outside of his professional life, Tom had a deep passion for the outdoors and horses. He was a proud member of the Verde Vaqueros, Roosevelt Roughriders, and the Scottsdale Mounted Sheriffs Posse, where he volunteered for search and rescue missions. Tom was also an avid golfer and held memberships at the Arizona Country Club, Pinetop Country Club, and Aspen Valley Country Club. He enjoyed horseback riding, particularly with his horses Zip and Scout, and had a special love for dogs, including Poncho, Murphy, Jackson, and Henry.

Family was of utmost importance to Tom, and he treasured spending time with his wife, children, and grandchildren. He created lasting memories on family vacations, particularly during their camping trips in Colorado in a Coleman tent trailer. Tom was known for his strong moral compass and coached various youth sports teams for John and Scott. He was a devoted fan of the University of Arizona Wildcats, the Arizona Diamondbacks, the Phoenix Suns, and the Arizona Cardinals.

Tom's dedication to philanthropy was recognized through numerous honors, including his presidency of the Roosevelt Rough Riders in 2001 and 2003, his captaincy of the Sheriff's Mounted Posse of McDowell Mountain in Scottsdale, Arizona in 2008, and President of the Sheriff's Mounted Posse in 2012. He was also honored as the "Top Hand" of the Sheriff's Mounted Posse in 2009.

Details for Tom's Celebration of Life service are yet to be determined. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to charities close to his heart including Child Crisis Arizona and Phoenix Children's Hospital, or a passion of your own choosing in Tom's honor.

Tom Dalzell will be remembered as a devoted family man, a lover of his country, of blackberry brandy, and the outdoors. He will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him.
