Thomas Epperson Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Feb. 5, 2018.
Thomas C. Epperson, age 71, of Woodstock, Georgia, passed away on Monday, February 5, 2018. Tom was born on April 20, 1946 to the late Thomas Epperson and Ahleene Collum in Gilmer, Texas.

Tom had many passions in life. He loved being in the United States Air Force and flying as a pilot. His main enjoyment came from the quality time he spent with his family. His family always came first and it showed in all aspects of his life. Tom was a very devoted, trustworthy and honest man. His love for his country showed through his career with the F.A.A. and for the United States Air Force. He retired as a Major after 39 years of dedicated service in the military and the U.S. government. His hobbies always had something to do with flying or mechanics, such as rebuilding planes, rebuilding cars with his sons, collecting guns and anything dealing with war planes.

He also enjoyed taking his own private plane to the Young Eagles, which was a group of children who have never flown in a plane before, and giving them rides. His favorite team was the Florida Gators, which stemmed from his graduation from University of Florida in 1969. In 1968, he married his high school sweetheart, Barbara Jones. They were married for 30 years until she had passed away in 1998. On January 26, 2002, he married childhood friend, Joy Blaze and they spent 18 wonderful years together before he passed away.

Tom is preceded in death by his parents, Thomas and Ahleene Epperson and loving wife, Barbara Jones. He is survived by his wife, Joy Blaze; sons, Bob (Joanna) Epperson and Travis (Monica) Epperson; grandson, Carter Epperson; granddaughter, Ansley Epperson; and many loving family members and friends, Annette (Frank) Breazale, Raye (Kenneth) White, Mack Mullican, Donna Marie (Tim) Riner, and Ken (Sally) Blaze and many loving family members of the Baird and Landsdale families to cherish his memories.

I learned so much about flying from Tom and really appreciated his love for aviation. Working with Tom, Randall and Charlie Lee to build the Porter-Epperson Stearman was a great experience that I will not forget. I can recall a flight in that plane, my first after test flights. We took off south at Air Acres, went around the patch and landed south. It was a bit scary, trees seemed pretty close on final, even though we had plenty of clearance. After we got out Sammy Bereznak found a pine branch and put in on one of the mains. Needless to say, it really took him aback, with a lot of laughter going on! We all loved Tom so much.

Tom spent many hours flying WWII pilots in the B-25 Georgia Girl at airshows or bomber group reunions, quietly sharing moments with them as they sat left seat for the first time in many years. He was a good man, good pilot and an especially good friend. We'll miss you so much, Tom.
