Thomas Flanagan Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jun. 27, 2025.
Thomas Martin Flanagan departed this life on June 21, 2025, at the age of 77, at his home in Salisbury, Maryland.

He was the beloved former husband of Christine Anne Flanagan, the loving father of Jacqueline Anne Pangelinan and Amy Marie Flanagan, and the cherished father-in-law of Joseph Pangelinan. He was the proud grandfather of five loving grandchildren: Thomas Michael Doyle, Brennan Matthew Doyle, Lily Anne Magdalena Pangelinan, Edward Eugene Pangelinan, and Evan Estelle Pangelinan. Tom was the son of Andrew H. and Estelle Martin Flanagan of Quincy, Massachusetts. He is survived by five siblings and many cousins he counted as siblings.

Raised in Quincy, Massachusetts, Tom was proud of his Irish roots. He earned his Bachelor's degree from Salem State University. While working at the Boston Gas Company, he obtained his Master of Business Administration from Suffolk University. Career opportunities later took him to the Chicago Board of Trade and Fannie Mae, bringing Tom and his family to Naperville, Illinois, and Rockville, Maryland. A subsequent role with the National Alliance of Business returned Tom and Chris to Boston, where they divided their time between the city and Stowe, Vermont. Tom later spent ten years in Washington, D.C., near Jackie and her family before settling closer to the ocean in Salisbury, Maryland.

Throughout his life, Tom worked with organizations such as Soldier On and Rising Star and was a caring advocate for veterans and the homeless. He was a longtime volunteer at Christ House, a nonprofit in Washington, D.C., providing care for sick, homeless men.

Tom will be remembered as a "charming rascal" who could spin a captivating yarn with a gleam in his eye. He had a deep love for the ocean and the outdoors. He was an avid reader of books on American history and current events. His family will remember him laughing and racing his daughters and siblings, Bill and Jean, down the ski slopes of Stowe, Vermont. As a cherished grandfather, he delighted in playing Santa, enjoying tennis matches (always followed by extra-large Slurpees), and running in the Trot for Hunger, which always led to his detailed instructions for making "the world's greatest" turkey on Thanksgiving. He will be deeply missed.

A service to celebrate Tom's life will be held at a future date.

In lieu of flowers, donations in Tom's memory may be made to Christ House in Washington, D.C.
