Thomas Forman Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers from Apr. 22 to Apr. 23, 2016.
It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of our father and grandfather, Thomas, at the Kipnes Centre for Veterans on April 9, 2016 at the age of 96 years.

Born in Calgary April 2,1920 to Nora and Thomas Herbert Forman, he graduated from high school at 16 years. He served in the RCAF in Britain and Canada during WW II as a radio-operator and then a pilot. He attended UofA in Electrical Engineering, where he met and married Elaine Archer. They spent their time between bases in Trenton and Edmonton raising their large family. He retired from 435 Squadron in 1964, achieving the rank of Flight Lieutenant. He earned his Electronics Certificate from NAIT and worked at UofA in the Mining & Metallurgy Department for 19 years. Upon retiring he spent his time with his Ham Radio Club, gardening, feeding the birds, being Mr. Fix-it and enjoying his multitude of grandchildren. He will be remembered for his humour, generosity, volunteer-ism and hospitality.

He is lovingly remembered by: sister-in-law: Belva McDaniel; Children: Lynda Mitchell, Lorne, Audrey (John) Schaapman, Barb Bowen, Tom (Janice), Ron, Elizabeth, Yvonne and Tim, Son-in-law Jim Blinch; 26 grandchildren, 17 great grandchildren, 2 great grandchildren and nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by his sister, May ( Ralph) Stinn; his wife, Elaine; his daughters Lorraine Schutte, Joan Blinch and sons-in-law Vic Schutte, Barry Mitchell and Kirk Bowen.

Many thanks to the staff at Saskatchewan Wing, Kipnes Centre for their kind care of our Dad.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to: Edmonton Humane Society, 13620-163 Street NW Edmonton T5V 0B2

Tom adopted my sister, brother and myself way back in the late 1940's. He was a great dad, gramps, and great-grampa to all of us. My girls, when they were young, called him "bumpa". He raised 11 children with mom; and lived to see his first 2 great-grandchildren (5 generations)! He is missed very
much by all of us, and we often reminisce about either his visits to us, or ours to see him.

I worked with Tom from 1980 to his retirement in the old Department of Mining, Metallurgical, & Petroleum Engineering. Every day at 10:00am, the technical support staff would meet in our designated coffee room. Even though the room changed location several times over the years, out of respect and affection, Tom's favorite chair was always reserved exclusively for him.
Tom radiated an air of gentleness and quiet confidence in everything he did. Over the years, he helped me countless times with electronic problems on complex equipment, notably the X-Ray Diffractometer and the Scanning Electron Microscope. He had a sixth sense about electronics which aided him to quickly diagnose and solve problems and he always did so with a sense of relaxed good humour.

As he was so greatly missed after retiring, so he is now after his passing.
My thoughts are with his entire family during this difficult time.

Tom was my Dad's cousin and on the maternal side, the family hailed from Grimsby in the UK. I really only found about Tom, Elaine and his family about 15 years ago when doing some family history research, so we visited them in 2004 and enjoyed much kind hospitality. Tom and I kept in touch after that and I'll certainly miss his Christmas letters. Deepest condolences to the family

I was saddened to learn of Tom's death. I worked with Tom for many years in the Department of Mining and Metallurgy. We shared much in common as we both served as flyers in the RCAF. Tom was very likeable and a delight to have around. He was also very useful in the department as he was able to fix anything electronic. I am sorry that I never kept closer contact with him after he left the university. " Per Ardua Ad Astra"
I wish to express my condolences to his family.
