Thomas Hoppe Greiwe was born in 1926 to Hermina Josephine Hoppe Greiwe and Raymond Edward Greiwe in Cincinnati, Ohio. He was the eldest in his family and had a sister, Frances Winifred Greiwe Glazer and brother, Donald Paul Greiwe. He attended Walnut Hills High School and graduated from the University of Notre Dame and the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine in 1949. During his last year of Medical School he met Connie Dickinson and married her in 1950. They were blessed to have six children; The couple moved to Detroit, Michigan where Tom interned at Henry Ford Hospital. He also completed a residency program at Children's Hospital of Michigan in pathology and hematology. He served in the U. S. Navy Air Corp during World War II and the United States Air Force during the Korean War. His Air Force Service temporarily interrupted his internship at Henry Ford and stationed the couple at Mac Dill Air Force Base. After returning to Henry Ford Hospital and completing his internship, Tom and Connie decided to make Tampa their permanent home. He opened his first office on the corner of Morrison and Mac Dill Ave. He practiced Pediatrics and Pediatric Allergy for over 40 years. He loved practicing medicine and used to talk about the great privilege and pleasure he had "taking care of generations of Tampa's nicest families". He was deeply rooted in his Catholic faith which moved him to be among the initial proponents of desegregation of hospital care in the City of Tampa. He brought patients he treated at the Clara Frye Memorial Hospital located in West Tampa(1938 to 1967) to Tampa General Hospital where he was chief of Pediatrics. Although he had separate waiting rooms for sick children versus well children, blacks and whites were never separated but always sat together. He was on the staff at Tampa General Hospital, St. Joseph Hospital and University Community Hospital, as well as, being a member of the voluntary clinical faculty of the University of South Florida College of Medicine. He served the Governor of Florida as a member of the Community Health Educational Council for ten years and acted as its Chairman for the last two years. He enjoyed being on the Jesuit High School Foundation as well as the Morning Star School Board. He said that one of the most fun things that he did professionally was to serve as Secretary - Treasurer for the Florida Pediatric Society and the Florida chapter of the American Academy of Pediatrics during the time that the Society was run out of a "suitcase". The following year when he became President along with the help of many statewide Pediatricians, they opened an office in Tallahassee. It was during these early years that the Society lobbied the legislature to require insurance companies based in Florida to cover children from birth rather than the 15 day period in existence at that time. His life-long loves were his family, his Catholic faith, his patients, education and athletics. He was an avid tennis player playing with friends at Tampa Yacht and Country Club, Palma Ceia Golf and Country Club as well as Cedar Creek Racquet Club in Cashiers, NC, where he was a member. He was preceded in death by his wife, Connie Greiwe; son, Thomas Hayden Greiwe; granddaughter, Lauren Zamzow; and brother, Don Paul. He is survived by his children: Donald Guy Greiwe (Robin), Connie Greiwe Zamzow, Robin Greiwe Midulla (Bill), Robert Bamberger Greiwe (Leticia), Genevieve Greiwe King (Ray) fourteen grandchildren; sister, Frances Glaser; and daughter-in-law, Kim Greiwe. There will be a visitation at Blount & Curry Funeral Home, 605 S. MacDill Ave, on Wednesday, November 18th from 4-6pm and a Funeral Mass at Christ the King Catholic Church on Thursday, November 19th at 10am. Burial will follow at Florida National Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, please make donations to The Pediatric Cancer Foundation. Arrangements handled by Blount and Curry MacDill, 813-876-2421.

I am so sorry to hear of the passing of Dr Greiwe. He was my pediatrician until I was 18, I am now 44. He was my brothers pediatrician also, he is 41. He was the pediatrician for both of my children who are now 26 and 20 and he diagnosed my son at 6 weeks old with rotavirus. I remember as a kid the way he would check our hearing. He would whisper a question in our ear and we would have to answer him. I also still have one of the sheets he always used to use to write the child's info on at the end of an appt. Dr greiwe was such a kind man all the time and I'm sure is missed every day.

I was blessed to have Dr. Greiwe was my pediatrician from birth to 19 years old. He was also my son's pediatrician from birth until he retired. He was a brilliant and caring doctor and we felt he was a part of our family. All of my sisters and cousins were his patients too.

It is with great sadness that i learned of the passing of my friend and colleague, Tom Greiwe. Tom and I had much in common. We both grew up in Cincinnati, attended Walnut Hills High School, and U of Cincinnati College of Medicine, practiced pediatrics and attended regularly the grand rounds of the Department of Pediatrics at Tampa general Hospital. I recall the many interesting conversations we had during the meetings and on the way to the parking garage. My condolences to his family, he was fine man and a good friend.

Transplanted to Tampa'
Regarding Re: Greiwe, Thomas Hoppe, (Obituaries, Nov. 17)
When he finally hung up his pediatric stethoscope, after 40 years, Dr. Thomas Greiwe took care of untold thousands of Tampa's military and civilian children, but most importantly to my family, via my parents that met him while being stationed at MacDill Air Force Base during the Korean war. My parents became friends with some of the finest 'transplanted to Tampa' military medical professionals: Pediatrician Dr. Griewe, Ob Gyn Dr. Harlow and dentist Dr. Peck, that remained in Tampa as civilians, thank God, all became our family specialists.
We lost Dr. Greiwe this week, and our family will always be grateful to his unselfish care to myself, as well as my five siblings. The annual physicals, shots, stitches, and even that time that I accidently 'squirted him' during an early physical, which my twin brother will never let me forget.
l will also always remember knowing what I was about to get, looking out his West Morrison Avenue office waiting room window, at the tall spire which included a long pointed needle at the top, atop the Bayshore Baptist Church across the street.
His obituary was spot on regarding he and Connie, his late wife's deeply rooted Catholic faith and love of tennis. I frequently would see them in their retirement, at the daily Mass at Christ the King church, 'dressed ready to play' in tennis sweat suits.
The obit also enlightened me to me never knowing of his leadership in the initial proponents of desegregation of hospital care in the city of Tampa.
May Dr. Greiwe eternally rest with our heavenly physician!

Dr. Greiwe was such a big part of my entire family, whatever he said was the word. He was the only one who woke me out of a deep coma at age 18.
He was always just a phone call away, to meet him at the office, day or night. His complete dedication will never be forgotten. I feel so very blessed to have had him in my life. God Bless,Glenda

Our family was so fortunate to have had Dr. Greiwe as our daughter & son's pediatrician! Along with treating our children's medical issues for 28 years, as young parents, Dr Greiwe helped us with his parental knowledge and experience. Our family was truly blessed! Our thoughts and prayers are with the entire Greiwe family.

Dr. Griewe became my pediatrician in 1956, he became my 1st sons doctor in 1974 and my second sons doctor in 1985, I believe he was also the doctor to a lot of my cousin. I can remember when my son was 15 years olds and we questioned Dr. Greiwe about how much longer he would continue to see him and he said as long as he wanted to come here he would continue to him.I know he treated me and my children as if they were his own, he will be missed.

Dr Greiwe was my pediatrician, and one time when I was home on leave - he saw my son too. He was a devoted Doctor and genuine good man. I remember various office visit snippets like him stocking a first aid kit for Troop 215 for a lengthy campout, whispering in my ear to check my hearing, setting a fractured thumb I suffered while horse-playing and putting in some stitches too.
It was an honor to know him. I appreciate his family giving their hours of Dr Greiwe's time away to others so that he could serve his patients.
Sincerely,

Dear Greiwe family, I am so sorry for your loss. Dr. Greiwe was our pediatrician until my sister and I were too old to be cared for by a pediatric doctor. He was a wonderful and caring doctor who always went above and beyond the call of duty. I remember being in the hospital for tests and he ran the stairs with my 10 year old hyperactive self. Prayers for your family.

Dr. Greiwe became my brothers pediatrician in 1957. I was six years old and I also became a patient. He was our Doctor through our teen years. A sign at his Morrison/McDill office read "The hurrier you go the behinder you get". I never understood what that meant. My children were born in 1982 and 1985 and I made sure Dr. Greiwe was their pediatrician. By 1986 I fully understood what
that sign meant! He was so soft spoken, gentle and loving to all his patients. We were so blessed to have had such a wonderful doctor care for my family for almost forty years. He will be remembered by so many people that had the privilege of having him as a Doctor. God Bless

Dear Greiwe family,
I must say your father was an amazing man. He was my entire families pediatrician for the last two generations. He used to make house calls to see my father and uncle when they were little children. I was a very sick child and your father provided care to be weekly and support to my family for the first 10 years of my life. He provided a lot of family support to my parents during this time. Your father was truly an amazing man and doctor. As an adult, I still talk about him and as now a medical provider I try to care for my patient's the way your father always took care of me, my family, and I am sure, all of his other patients. I pray that each of you are at peace as I know your father now is. God Bless each and every one of you.

Dr. Greiwe was my pediatrician since birth. He was such a caring and sweet man. I remember my mother telling the story of me cutting my forehead on a glass table and Dr. Greiwe came to our house from a dinner party to take care of me. He was my son's pediatrician and my daughter's up until his retirement. We've always thought the world of him. Prayers and condolences to the family.

We were so blessed to have such a caring & accomplished pediatrician for our 4 girls from birth to college. When Sheila developed juvenile diabetes at 14 she called Dr. Greiwe early each morning at his home & together they monitored her diabetes.
He always made young mothers feel comfortable & discussed each stage of development with us & what to expect.
What a wonderful man & what a valuable contribution he made to make a better world!
God bless his family!

Dr. Griewe was an integral part of our family. I trusted him with my children as did my parents with me. He was always 99.9 right on with his diagnosis not to mention ahead of his time in analyzing the cause of different conditions and diseases. I still go back to many of his ideas and beliefs with my grandchildren. Thank you Dr. Greiwe for all the gifts you gave my family.

Words cannot convey the thoughtfulness, generosity, professionalism and dedication exemplified by Dr. Greiwe. Our family will be forever grateful for his loving pediatric care and comforting presence. He was a respected leader who showed appreciation for others. We knew Dr. Greiwe as both a physician and employer but, first and foremost, he was our beloved friend. He was a good man and will be deeply missed. Love and prayers to his family.

Dr. Greiwe was a great doctor. He and Dr. Pippin diagnosed my little brother with Hirschsprung's Disease in the early 1980's, during a time that not much was known about the disease, and many died from not having the necessary surgeries. He also covered my parent's deductible since they couldn't afford it. May he rest in peace.
