He is survived by his devoted wife, Marci Merliss Holliday, daughter Devon Holliday Pothier (Jeremy), son Thomas "Trey" Holliday (Jenny), stepdaughter Jessica Merliss, four brothers and 5 grandchildren, Chase, Charlotte, Grace, Luke and Jack. Tom was born in 1948 at Camp Hood, Texas, home of First Cavalry. His father was a Colonel in the U.S. Army and he moved posts, living in Texas, Virginia, Arizona, Japan, and finally CA, finishing high school at the San Miguel School in San Diego. Tom attended Stanford University on a football scholarship. Quick on his feet, he played both football and baseball proudly. He graduated Phi Beta Kappa. He attended USC law school serving as executive editor of the Law Review. He was elected to the Order of the Coif. Following graduation, he joined Gibson, Dunn & Crutcher, specializing as a criminal trial lawyer for 35 years until his retirement in 2009. He was Co-Chair of the firm's Business Crimes and Investigations Group, and was Co-Partner-In-Charge 1995-1999. Tom was recently accepted into a Masters Program in WWII studies. He loved mentoring and inspiring the young and touched countless lives. He had a huge heart and gave to many. He was humble, charming, thoughtful and a romantic. Tom was a weightlifter and spent many happy years at Gold's Gym competing for Joe. He was still bench lifting a few times a week. He loved Trader Vic's, Elvis, his blue suede shoes, Hawaiian shirts, Westerns and cowboys, the American flag, and anything connected with WWII and Churchill. His biggest joy was spending time with his family and friends and being "Gramps." We will see you in our dreams…. A celebration of Tom's life will be held on Sunday, August 25. Living on Cape Cod, I only just learned about Tom's death.
We were classmates at San Miguel School from 9th through 12th grade, where Tom was an outstanding student, class leader, top athlete, and loyal friend to all.
When we arose from our chairs at the Class of 1967 graduation ceremony, I recall Tom reached across to be the first to shake my hand.
Tom was universally considered the most likely to succeed, an early prophecy that was more than fulfilled in every aspect of his life.
What shocking sad news to hear.
The condolences I send to his family are heartfelt and sincere.

Heartbroken for Marci & Tom's family. Although I only had the pleasure of meeting Tom in recent years... I knew he was a special human [a rare one as they say]. Open hearted, honest, brilliant, strategic, & one of a kind are the only words I have to describe this man even towards the end of his time on this earth. Wish the world had more lawyers like Tom. The first time I spoke to Tom & Marci.. it was clear they were a team + so mindful & caring towards others. Tom made me feel like a long lost friend even though we had just met. Words can not describe how sad I was to learn of his passing. May God give Marci & his family the strength and grace to move through this difficult time. Tom will be missed beyond words.. Sending you of my love & prayers.

I had the pleasure of working with Tom from 1974-1978 as a GD&C Corporate Paralegal In the Beverly Hills office. I can still visualize him in my office pleading with me to take on more work from him as he was assigned more work from Lee Battles! As much as I dreaded seeing him walk in my door, I also knew that he would tell me a joke or charm me or make me laugh one way or the other. I am very sad to hear of his passing.
