I met Tom some 45 years ago when we worked in the same Branch in the Fuze Department at China Lake, and also shared an office. Tom and I were split organizationally, from the then Fuze Department (through a reorganization), but Tom later applied for, and got a supervisory position in the same organization in which I was working. I subsequently transferred into Tom’s group, and he became my boss.
Once, on a weekend night returning from LA, my car broke down half way back to Ridgecrest. I knew it was an inconvenience, but I called Tom for help. So, in the middle of the night he got out of bed, left his family, got in his car which had an empty gas tank, found an open gas station after midnight, filled up his car, and proceeded to drive the 120 or so miles to pick us (my former wife and I) up and drove us back the Ridgecrest! True friendship. I’ve maintained a friendship with Tom throughout the years, both working with him and for him throughout my career professionally, and as a personal friend, through thick and thin.

RIP Grandpa. I love you and I will miss you. I remember like it was yesterday the day you took me snorkeling or the first time you let me drive your el camino, ever since then ive always told people that was my dream car. Or the time you taught me how to ride a dirt bike, I went out in your back yard, started hitting the trails and it the dirt bike shut off, so I pushed it all the way back to the house through the sand, boy was that a work out.
Love you!
Derek.
