MARSHALL
THOMAS
Former chairman and chief executive officer of Aristech Chemical Corporation, Thomas Marshall, age 77, a life long resident of Pittsburgh, passed away on Friday, March 10, 2006. A Pittsburgh native, Mr. Marshall served in the U.S. Navy from 1946 to 1948. While in the Navy, he was a member of Admiral Byrd's last expedition to Little America and the Antarctic as a crew-member of the USS Pine Island. He joined U.S. Steel's transportation subsidiary, Ohio Barge Line, in 1949 while attending the University of Pittsburgh at night. He became one of the youngest officers of U.S. Steel in 1972 when he became President of several barge line subsidiaries. He continued his career with U.S. Steel serving in several top positions including Group Vice President of Resource Development and President of the U.S. Diversified Group, a unit of the former USX Corporation encompassing twenty-one divisions. In 1986 he assumed the position of Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Aristech Chemical Corporation when USX Corporation spun off its USS Chemicals Division into a separate and independent publicly owned company. Mr. Marshall served on the boards of directors of PNC Bank, Allegheny Teledyne, Arch Coal, Dietrich Industries and Dynamet, Inc. He also served on the boards of many organizations in Pittsburgh including serving as chairman of the Allegheny Trails Council, Boy Scouts of America and was the recipient of its Silver Beaver Award. In addition, he served as a Trustee and Trustee Emeritus at the University of Pittsburgh and is the recipient of the University's Bicentennial Medallion of Distinction, the Chancellor's Medal, the Joseph M. Katz Graduate School of Business Distinguished Alumnus Award, and in 2000 was named a Legacy Laureate. He was the recipient of an honorary degree of Doctor of Laws from Washington and Jefferson College. Mr. Marshall felt that his greatest satisfaction came after his retirement in 1995 when he funded the Thomas Marshall Foundation which makes grants to organizations working to improve the quality of life for children and their families. Since it was founded, millions of dollars have been contributed to many organizations. The work of his Foundation will continue under the direction of his daughter. Mr. Marshall is survived by his wife, Joan Marshall, of Mt. Lebanon, his four children, Thomas (Jane) Marshall of Vancouver, Washington; Jeffrey (Therese) Marshall of Norwich, Vermont; William (Virginia) Marshall of Marco Island, Florida and Sue Marshall (Jeffrey) Roberts of Sewickley, PA. Also surviving are ten grandchildren and one great-granddaughter. A Service will be held at 11 am Wednesday, March 15 at The Presbyterian Church, Sewickley, 414 Grant Street. The family will greet friends immediately following the Service at the Edgeworth Club, Sewickley. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial donations in Thomas Marshall's name to The David C. Koch Regional Perfusion Cancer Therapy Center, c/o Development Department, UPMC Cancer Pavilion, 5150 Center Ave., Pgh., PA 15232.

Aunt Joan, Sue, Tim, Jeff and Bill:

I would like to say how sorry I am about Uncle Tom's passing!!! I would also like to say something on a personal note. He always made me laugh and I always looked forward to seeing him when we could!!!! And hearing of the stories from dad when they (Uncle Bill, dad, Uncle Tom) were growing up and even now watching them when they would be together. Memmory: When we were little Uncle Tom would BIT US instead of kissing us when he came over and we all would hide and not come out until he left. Uncle Tom used to get a kick out of that and so did we. But it hurt hee hee. I know there are so many more times you all had with Meg, Cindy and Jimmy that I don't even remember. But I do know that I will miss his snicker and how distinguished he was and always will be. I hope that this makes you all laugh and remember all the good times!! If there is anything we can do please let me know!

Dear Joan,

My deepest sympathy to you & your family in the loss of your beloved Tom.

It was my privilege to be your pastor for a number of years in Mt. Lebanon. I admired Tom greatly--& of course also his long-time friend, Bob Swindell.

Two super Christian gentlemen !

The world is a better place for men like that.

May the Lord comfort you in your bereavement.

Sympathetically,

Jack Howard

Tom was my greatest mentor and friend. He was most instrumental for my successful career at Ohio Barge Line and Warrior & Gulf. He has and will always remain in my thoughts.

We wish to express our sincere sympathy to the family of Tom Marshall. My family and I were great fans of Mr. Marshall. A towboat named after my father, the M/V C.W. Rushing was one of the towing vessels that towed cement for Universal Atlas Cement for quite a number of years. Mr. Marshall was a very fine man and a good friend to everyone in the towing industry. We share in your sorrow.
