Thomas D. Mattern passed away at 11:00 AM on April 21, 2021 at his home in Syracuse Indiana. He was born April 4, 1949 at Elkhart General Hospital to Richard “Jake” and Ellen Jean “Hennie” (Pippen) Mattern, who both preceded him in death in 2016 and 2007 respectively. He was a 1967 graduate of Nappanee High School and in 1971 received his undergraduate degree from Ball State University. He was a member of Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity.
Tom’s 47 year career in marketing began at Coral Glass in Bremen, Indiana in 1971. He married his wife Becky in 1972 at the Monroeville United Methodist Church. Together, they relocated to Fort Wayne, Indiana and Tom started his career at Bonsib Advertising Agency as an Account Executive. Through the years, he was promoted through the ranks until he finally served as President and COO. After leaving Bonsib, Tom opened Marketshare +. The agency offered advertising and marketing services for 26 years not only to the Fort Wayne area, but across the nation as well.
Tom was active in the Fort Wayne Advertising Club, Ducks Unlimited, Ball State University Marketing Alumni Advisory Board, and the Wawasee Sailing Club. He enjoyed cars, whether he was working on, driving, or vintage racing them. Tom avidly followed Formula 1 racing for years. The best day was a great lake day spent with friends and family boating, cooking, and laughing. Tom and Becky wintered in Naples, Florida and he was a member of Bear’s Paw Country Club.
Tom is survived by his wife Becky (Frederick), and they were able to celebrate their 49th wedding anniversary on April 15, 2021. He will be greatly missed by his brother Bill (Cheryl) Mattern, his sister Lisa (Warren) Maccaroni, nephews, nieces, great-nephews, and great-nieces. A private celebration of Tom’s life will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, we invite you to make a donation in Tom’s name to the Ball State University Marketing Department.
Online: https://connect.bsu.edu/miller-give and select Marketing Department from the drop down menu, and write “In Memory of Tom Mattern” in comments about the gift. Checks can be made to the Ball State University Foundation, at 2800 W. Bethel Ave., Muncie IN 47304. In the memo line please include, “Marketing Department - In Memory of Tom Mattern.”

I just learned of Tom's passing. He was a great person and will be missed by all who knew him. I last saw Tom at our 50th class reunion in 2017. I have many fond memories of things that my twin brother, Dick, and I did with Tom while we grew up together in Nappanee. My deepest sympathies to his wife and entire family.

Tom was an around great individual. He was both a fun and serious person. He liked the Marketing Department at Ball State Un. And we very much liked him. Our deep condolences to Becky and his family. Jim Lowry, former chair of the BSU Marketing Department.

Becky, Bill, Lisa, the years I spent working with Tom were some of the best of my professional life. A dozen years ago I took my 94 year old mother to her last Nappanee High School reunion. Thanks to hours of travel time with Tom, I had one of the highest scores on the Nappanee History Trivia Game that night. I'll miss his stories, I miss his friendship. I miss the work we shared. But when I hear a good joke, I still hear his laugh. I am so sorry for your loss.

Becky, I was sorry and surprised to read of Tom's death in the paper this morning. I am thinking of you, knowing that after 49 years it will be even more difficult to adjust to life without him.

Tom (and his wife Becky) was a wonderful friend that I had the fortune to know, share travel and culinary experiences with (Toronto!), and laugh at his great sense of humor. Many a meal and good times shared with he and Becky were full of great conversations and he will be missed in this world. My best to Becky and his family.

Really quite a nice guy with a ready smile and creative ideas in a rough and tumble business. He was a regular in the advertising and PR world for many years and a bright spot to those of us who had a chance to work on a project or two with him. Bye, Tom, and thanks for all the insights and help..

This is Nancy Pippen Eckerman, Uncle Firm's daughter. I am so sorry to hear this. I feel this deeply and would like to convey my condolences to his siblings, nieces, nephews, etc.
I believe, my memory dims, that Tom was known as Cooksey to the family, as he was always asked Grandmother Pippen for her delicious cookies. Please, let me know when the celebration of his life is planned. I didn't know he followed Formula One. My late ex husband and I attended the Grand Prix of Canada twice. Yours Nancy Pippen Eckerman
