Thomas McCourt Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Mar. 19, 2025.
Thomas "Tom" Bernard McCourt III was a man of warmth, humor, and unwavering devotion to his family. Born and raised in Brooklyn, New York, he was the son of Thomas McCourt II and Joan McCourt and the loving brother of Pam Sydney. He graduated from Xavier High School before obtaining a bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering from Texas A&M University. Tom was commissioned as an officer in the US. Navy, achieving the rank of Lieutenant while serving in the Persian Gulf War. Tom dedicated his professional career to the training, leading, and mentorship of others.

He was a loving father, son, uncle, and friend. He is survived by his four children-Samantha, Abbie, Paige, and Zach. Though his marriage to Polly Christopher ended after their youngest child was born, Tom remained deeply committed to his family. Together, they moved to Oregon, where his family grew up. Tom embraced and nurtured his remarkable blended family, including his children's half-siblings, Matilda and Essau, and their stepfather, Mike.

Tom was the kind of person everyone wanted to be around-quick with a joke, always up for a great conversation, and an anchor of patience and calm. He had a deep love for music, movies, and the theater, passions he passed down to his children. Whether going for a long walk or enjoying a night at the movies, he found joy in life's simple pleasures, as long as they were shared with those he loved.

He was also a trivia master and a knower of obscure knowledge, always ready with a fact no one else could recall. Whether it was history, pop culture, or the most random piece of information imaginable, Tom had a way of making learning fun and fascinating.

Above all, Tom will be remembered as a great father, son, uncle, and cherished friend-someone you could always count on in tough times. His greatest lesson to his children was to stay lighthearted even when life got difficult.

A celebration of Tom's life will be held on March 22, 2025, at 11:00 AM at The Attic at McMenamins Edgefield. Friends and family are invited to gather, share memories, and honor the life of a truly remarkable man.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the American Red Cross in Tom's name, honoring his lifelong commitment to giving. Tom was a frequent donor throughout his life, always eager to help those in need.

I was so sorry to hear of Tom's passing. We worked together for many years and as others have said he was always a bright light in my day. His warmth and sense of humor were unending. He had a smile and a kind word for everyone. The world feels a bit less without him. My deepest condolences to his family and close friends.

I was shocked and saddened to learn of the passing of my shipmate Tom. I served with Tom aboard USS Germantown from 1987-1990. I considered him to be my closest fellow junior officer in the wardroom. During our deployment in 1989, we often went ashore together and watched out for one another. I remember fondly the night we played mini-golf at Naval Station Subic Bay. I can't remember exactly, but he might have won.

Tom was a good and honorable man who will be missed by all who knew him. My condolences to all of his family.

Fair winds and following seas, my friend.

I am truly heartbroken to hear about the passing of Tom. Words feel so inadequate at a time like this, but please know that my thoughts are with you and your family.

Tom brought so much light and joy to everyone around him, and his spirit will live on in all of us who were fortunate to know Tom I will always cherish the moments and memories we shared together. His kindness, humor, and the way they he made me everyone feel are qualities that will never be forgotten.
