Thomas McDonald Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Sep. 12, 2025.
Thomas Kent McDonald was born September 3, 1959 in Garnett, Kansas. He was the only son of Merritt William and Roannah Kent McDonald. He left this world on August 29, 2025.

Besides being a loving son to his parents, brother to his sisters, husband to his wife, and father to his children, Tom was a humble and talented craftsman, artist, teacher, mechanical engineer, inventor and friend. He was an amazing person who brought a singular light and energy to this world. Employed at what is now Collins Aerospace (RTX), he began his career at Puritan-Bennett Corporation straight out of college (Pittsburg State University). He never left, choosing instead to ride the highs and lows as the company changed and transformed for over 40 years from a family business to a Fortune 500 company. He was loyal, honest, and kind.

Tom is survived by his wife Cheri McDonald and their 2 children, Charles McDonald and Sarah McDonald. He is also survived by his three sisters Sally (Charles, deceased) Feuerborn, Merritt Ann Wilson, and Vicki (Wayne) Hulett - and many cousins, nephews and nieces whom he loved.

One of Tom's great joys was being able to serve as Father Christmas in his later years. He loved children and he considered it a calling. He did his best to bring joy and hope where he could. It was not unusual for a young child to come up to him in a store, when he was out of costume and declare "I know who you are!" Tom would always smile, wink, and make them promise not to tell anyone. Then from some pocket he would produce a candy cane for the child and go along his way on whatever errand he was running. He always had time for them.

His faith was an important part of his life. He lived his beliefs every day - the one that made us all loves us all. May his memory be a blessing.

Celebration of New Life will be held September 27, 2025, 10:00 am at Christ Church Anglican, 5500 91st Street, Overland Park, KS 66212. Reception to follow.
