In Memoriam: Thomas Q. Morris, MD

The New York Academy of Medicine (NYAM) mourns the loss of Dr. Thomas Q. Morris, a visionary leader and steadfast advocate for the NYAM's mission and ideals. Dr. Morris was a cornerstone of our community, embodying dedication, wisdom, and compassion throughout his decades of service.

Dr. Morris became a Fellow of NYAM in 1987, marking the beginning of a remarkable relationship with the Academy. His contributions were vast and transformative, serving as Vice President for Programs, a member of our Board of Trustees beginning in 2004, and later as Chairman of the Board from 2008 until stepping down in 2014. In recognition of his enduring commitment and exemplary leadership, he was awarded the title of Chairman Emeritus. Among his many accolades, NYAM honored him in 1997 for exceptional service to the Academy and again in 2014 he received special recognition for his longtime commitment to and leadership of the Board of Trustees and his lifetime of service to the New York medical community. His legacy continues to inspire us all.

Dr. Morris was instrumental in shaping NYAM's strategic direction. He played a pivotal role in the selection of NYAM's first and second full-time presidents, Dr. Jeremiah Barondess and Dr. Jo Ivey Boufford. His unmatched ability to balance rigor, diplomacy, and humor left an indelible mark on our growth and success.

Beyond his contributions to NYAM, Dr. Morris's career was defined by a deep commitment to excellence in medical education and health care. A proud alumnus of Columbia University's College of Physicians and Surgeons, he served in numerous top leadership roles at Columbia and its affiliated health system, a testament to the trust and admiration of his colleagues. At the time of his passing, he held the titles of Alumni Professor of Clinical Medicine at Columbia and Consultant Emeritus at NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital.

Colleagues and friends often remarked on Dr. Morris's unparalleled ability to lead with humor, integrity, and a deep sense of humanity. Dr. Morris's passing is a profound loss to NYAM and the broader medical community. His life was a testament to the values of service, leadership, and compassion. We extend our deepest condolences to his family, friends, and all those fortunate enough to have known him.

"I have been blessed to serve a number of great medical institutions and foundations, and to serve on many public commissions and boards. ...They have enriched my knowledge and understanding and hopefully I have enriched theirs as well. ...These types of collaborations ... and those of NYAM's leadership, trustees and fellows... in turn enrich the work of the Academy." A friend and well known colleague from Bellevue, Harlem, and CPMC.. We both owe much to Dr. Charles Ragan whose chief resident Tom was in 1960. Tom was always attentive to others and a fine person. I am sorry for your loss. We who were at Columbia's First Medical Division in the 1960's were all close.Tom once told me he was also close with Dr. Dickinson Richards who directed First medical Division before Ragan and was a Nobel Laureate in Medicine. As Tom put much time into Beirut , Lebanon and its university hospital I gave him my father's book on practicing gynecology in Beirut from 1933-1948 and Tom wrote me he found it interesting. In recent e-mails we shared memories of people we knew many years ago.
