Thomas G. Mumford

MUMFORD, THOMSAS G., passed away on July 5, 2013 in Jacksonville, FL. Born on January 20, 1929 in Miami, FL, he was the son of the late John M. Mumford and Margaret Galligan Fisher. Tom was a graduate of Ponce de Leon High School, class of 1947, UNC Chapel Hill, class of 1951, and the University of Florida, class of 1975. He joined the United States Coast Guard Reserves in 1951, serving until his retirement as Commander in 1971. After 20 years in the family insurance business, he returned to college at the University of Florida to pursue a second career in Landscape Architecture. Moving to Stuart, FL in 1975, he was a successful Landscape Architect in both the public and private sectors. Surviving family includes his daughter Susan M. Talbot (Randy) of Gainesville, FL; sons John Mumford (Rachel) of Jacksonville, FL; E. Carr Mumford (Ellen) of Charlotte, NC; Michael Mumford (Marguerite) of Jacksonville, FL; Patrick Mumford (wife Lauri) of Charlotte, NC; thirteen grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife of 41 years, Margaret Acer Mumford and first wife, Susan Smith Mumford. A funeral mass will be held at St. Hugh Catholic Church in Coconut Grove, FL at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, July 27th. Burial services will follow immediately at Woodlawn Park Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to a charity of choice.
