Thomas Peters Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on May 9, 2020.

Thomas Dean “Tom” Peters, age 77 of Logansport and formerly of Elwood, passed away unexpectedly on Thursday, April 30, 2020 at St. Vincent Mercy Hospital in Elwood following minor health issues.  He was born January 8, 1943 in Elwood, the son of Danny Dean and Mary Jane (Jarrell) Peters.  Tom was a 1961 graduate of Wendell L. Willkie High School before attending Indiana University and entering the workforce.  Later in life, he received his Bachelor’s Degree from Indiana University Kokomo Campus in 1993.  Tom married his soulmate, Diane Usfo, on June 29, 1963 and they shared over 53 years of marriage together before her passing in 2016.  Tom retired in 2000 from Chrysler Corporation in Kokomo where he was an Area Maintenance Manager.  He continued working for Chrysler after retirement as an outside contractor.

Tom was formerly affiliated with St. Joseph Catholic Church in Elwood where he was director of the C.Y.O. and also affiliated with All Saints Catholic Church in Logansport for several years.  He was a former member of the Elwood Elks Lodge #368, the Knights of Columbus, and the Panther Den Alumni Association.  Tom especially enjoyed fishing, traveling, spending winters in Florida for many years, and numerous maritime visits.  He was an avid fan of Notre Dame; enjoyed listening to 50’s and 60’s music; and like the group “Polkaboy”.  Tom had a reserved table at his favorite restaurant, Applebee’s in Logansport where the staff was like extended family.  He always had a great sense of humor and was easy to spend time with.  More than anything, Tom was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather who will be greatly missed.

Tom’s family includes 3 children, Christen Peters of Greenfield, Audrey Peters of Indianapolis, and Jason (wife Susan) Peters of Elwood; 2 brothers, James “Mike” (wife Pam) Peters of Elwood and David (wife Helen) Peters of Elwood; 6 grandchildren, Katharine Peters, Nathan Peters (Elizabeth McCormick), Luke Peters (fiance' Allison Lipetz), Elizabeth Rice, Amelia Peters, and Henry Peters-Gomez; 5 great-grandchildren, Bryson Peters, Estelle “Stella” Crawford, Nathaniel Peters, Kori Peters, and Charlotte “Charlie” Rice; 2 brothers-in-law, David McPhearson and John Hagan; and numerous cousins, nieces, and nephews.  Tom was preceded in death by both his parents; wife, Diane Peters; sister, Carole J. McPhearson; and sister-in-law, Marie Hagan.

Adhering to the restrictions on public gatherings for the safety of our community, a private graveside memorial service will be held for his family at 11:00 am on Saturday, May 9, 2020 at St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery in Elwood with Father Dan Duff of St. Joseph Church, officiating.  Burial of Tom’s ashes will take place in the cemetery next to his wife immediately after the service.  Memorial contributions may be made to Riley Children’s Hospital or Down Syndrome of Indiana through the funeral home.  Copher-Fesler-May Funeral Home has been entrusted with Tom’s funeral arrangements.  Online condolences and memories may be shared at copherfeslermay.com.

I am a high school classmate and friend of Tom's and fellow graduate of WLWHS Class of '61. I met Tom when I moved from Michigan to Elwood in our Junior year. My new classmates were wonderful & welcoming - Tom included. I felt that I had known him all of my life. He was Smart, Talented in Sports, Honest , Witty at times, Kind & Supportive. He had a Positive Attitude and was fun to be around. I always considered him to be one of my best friends. We, along with our spouses, caught up at Reunions and frequently sat together. I was delighted when he & Christen stopped by to see us in Michigan while they were here for a concert a few years ago! My youngest daughter was home and the 4 of us went out for breakfast. Over the past few years we have talked on the phone every few months, and through Facebook I have met Audrey & her delightful Henry. He adored his family & talked about them frequently. Audrey, Christen & Jason, you were blessed with special parents! May you & your family find solace in the countless Wonderful Memories you must have!!! God Bless!

Although life took us down different paths, Tom was a dear friend during his time at Borg Warner in Muncie. We spent a lot of time together at work and afterwards. His main focus was always on his family. He would also beam with pride as he talked about them.He was a good man and the world will surely miss him.Bill and Diann Wood

My wife, Judi (Rudig), and I graduated from high school with Tom and offer our condolences. My earliest recollection of him is playing baseball in the Elwood Pony League, but it is likely we went back further as we both lived in the southwest quadrant of Elwood, he on South D, me on South J. Osborn Elementary was in between and was a gathering spot for pick-up baseball games so we probably crossed paths much earlier than I remember. After h.s. we parted ways but reconnected years later via social media. I saw him at class reunions and we even got together once for lunch in Carmel a few years ago. My sense is that he enjoyed his life. He was unfailingly cheerful as I knew him. A solid human being and he will be missed by many.

This is heart-wrenching. I talked to Tom only a couple of weeks ago on the phone. Tom and I always met for a meal or two every single time I came back to Indiana. Diane and Tom both were so loyal and appreciative of the times we shared together. We've been great friends since the early days of the online Panther Den. Visiting with Tom every single time I came back was always a highlight of my visits. We had already talked about visiting this summer. He and I could not talk to each other without a lot of laughter becoming a major part of the conversation. I will miss his laughing, I will miss his visits, and so much more than that, I will always miss Tom. I thought the world of him and he knew it. I am in grief over his passing. My heart goes out to his family and friends.
