Thomas Plummer Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Mar. 6, 2023.
Tom Plummer, German professor, father, bishop, grandfather, artist, writer, and husband died at the age of 83 on March 5th. A native Salt Laker, he also lived in Vienna, Cambridge, the Twin Cities, Berlin, Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island, Hawaii, New York City, and anywhere his wife of 58 years, Louise, lived.

After a 2 1/2 year mission to Austria, Tom dedicated himself to the study of German literature, film, and art. With a BA from the University of Utah and a PhD from Harvard, he started his career at the University of Minnesota. While chairing the German department, he produced Germany in the 20s-a cultural event focusing on the lessons of the Weimar Republic. He brought masterpieces from all over the world to the Walker Art Center and other venues across the Twin Cities. Academically, the event included two books, several catalogs, and a magazine. The biggest event was a production of The Rise and Fall of the City of Mahogany performed by the Metropolitan Opera Company.

Tom almost left academia for entrepreneurship. His first experiment failed when he started a snow blowing business ahead of the worst winter Minnesota had seen in twenty years. But Master Seal Coaters succeeded with cheap child labor, a rusted truck through which you could watch the road pass by under your feet, and plenty of damaged asphalt. Despite a rough start where his glasses dropped in tar sealant and family members traded colorful words, Tom stuck it out. By the end of Summer, he knew he could make it in the asphalt business and make it his profession. Luckily for everyone involved he was offered a position at BYU and managed to move home to Utah after twenty years away.

Tom chaired the humanities department a year after arriving in Provo. He later team-taught a memoir class through the Honors department with Louise and published three memoirs of his own. He was everyone's cheerleader. He relished the opportunity to forward their academic pursuits or exult in their other achievements. He did the same for his sons and their wives (Jon and Julie, Ed and Dede, Charles and Erica, and Sam and Sarah) and any grandchild who asked (he had fourteen). Academic achievement was a core value that he instilled in everyone.

In retirement Tom took up painting when Louise brought him to watercolor class. He became prolific when he switched to the iPad inspired by David Hockney's digital work and built a Facebook community of nearly 5,000 friends, artists, and fans.

Tom has requested Mahler's Symphony No. 2 be played at his resurrection.

A memorial service will be held in Tom's honor at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 27th Ward, 185 P St, Salt Lake City, UT at 11:00 AM, Saturday, March 11, 2023 with an after party at noon.

The service will also be available via Zoom: https://zoom.us/j/92559029413

Louise. I trust you have an idea of how much Tom meant to me. I guess I am destined to go on alone while he keeps the heavenly hosts entertained. I'll probably be seeing him soon. Luvs, Art

In June 1968, Tom literally changed the course of my life. We stopped in Cambridge to stay overnight with Tom and Louise after a Junior Year Abroad in Freiburg, Germany. We were on our way to Salt Lake to report for the draft in the midst of the Vietnam War. Tom insisted that I should explore a way of finishing my Senior year at Harvard College. He pointed out that summer classes had just begun. I followed his advice and discovered that I could qualify for an Officer Candidate training program if I could complete my Senior year by January. By enrolling for summer classes, I could doable it. Then in January when I showed up at the Boston Naval Yard to be sworn into this Army program, I found out that my plan had been rejected at the last minute and I was given a 4-F designation because of a childhood bout of scarlet fever that had left me with a kidney condition for a number of months. Because of this unexpected waiver from any military service, I was able to graduate and go on to Law School at the University of Utah in September. I have always believed that Tom´s kind direction permitted me to begin my professional career in law and my decades of being a professor of law. I clearly see the hand of the Lord in these pivotal events stemming from my friendship with Tom. I had served as his counselor in our Cambridge Ward Elders Quorum presidency earlier.

Tom and Louise Plummer are two of the most witty, funny, smart, courageous, and committed people we have ever known! They "lit up the room" wherever they were and brought love and laughter into everyone´s life who knew them. One favorite memory was Tom on the piano and Louise draped alternatively on Tom and/ or the piano as the " vamp" with the
long- stemmed rose in her teeth. Tom stoically played on as Louise mimed the role of the unappreciated lover. It took everyone present months to recover from the side- splitting laughter that reduced us to tears and almost made us sick. Tom and Louise made Minnesota wind chills and mountainous snow that never seemed to melt except on a rare Tuesday in July bearable. We loved you both then and we always will. Thank you for blessing our lives so abundantly when we were starving for warmth and laughter!!!

Dear Louise, We are so shocked and saddened by Tom's passing. Anne Van Soest texted me to let us know, and she, too, sends her love, as do we. We have so many favorite memories with you that I'll have to write a long letter to include them all (Provo, Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island, and Salt Lake, and time at our cabin come to mind). Meanwhile, we are thinking about what a kind, Christlike man Tom is and how our lives have been blessed to know both of you. We truly love you and are praying for your peace. P.S. You wrote the obit, didn't you? It's so Tom!!

I've always admired Tom for the good man that he is...and the way he lived a life true to himself. I'm very sorry for your loss. I send love your way and know that this separation will just be for a short while.

Tom was my favorite German professor. When I decided to become an educator, my parents weren´t thrilled. Upset, I went to him for advice. He listened and told me that we do things that might scare or worry our parents, but that ultimately we needed to be true to ourselves and find what brings us joy. His kindness at that moment changed my life. He was an excellent professor and so very funny. He and Louise were a fantastic team. (She was one of my favorite English professors as well.) Bis später, Herr Professor.

Tom Plummer! What an amazing life.
What an accomplished life. I feel like I have come to know him through his portrait art on face book and the short biographies that were part of each portrait. He obviously was a great observer of people. His influence on me and many, many others has been profound. I pray for comfort to be with Louise, Bonnie, his four sons, his fourteen grand children and all of us that loved him.

To Louise and the Plummer family.
I grieve with you at the passing of your husband, father and grandfather.
I am privileged to have shared some special times with Tom.
We rejoiced together when Tom and Louise`s son, Sam, and my daughter Sarah were married.
We grieved when their first child. Lucy, passed away.
We rejoiced together numerous times since at the musical talents and scholastic achievements of the four beautiful grandchildren born thereafter.
I am awed at Tom`s lifetime achievements. I am thankful for our friendship and for the wonderful example Tom is to me.
Heavenly Father will bless you.
Love and Condolences,
David
