Milburn Cain Obituary

Published by PL-Lake from Jan. 5 to Jan. 15, 2023.
Milburn David Cain, Sr., (M. David Cain) passed away at home on December 14, 2022. Born March 15, 1937 in Libertyville, IL to Milburn Calkins "Bill" Cain and Katherine Crocker Cain, David was raised in Antioch, IL, graduated Northwestern University with a BSBA in Accounting in 1959 and married Sue Stinespring in 1959. Tragically, five years later, Sue and their second son, Gregory, died in a car accident. Their son, David (Skip) Jr. survived the accident. David Sr. married again in 1965 to Wyn (Ethelwyn) Hrdina. Their daughter, Ann, and son, Joe, were born in the late sixties.

Licensed to practice as a CPA in both Illinois and Wisconsin, David was a partner first with Jedele and Cain, and later in partnership with Rose, Christensen & Cain. He was sole practitioner of Milburn Cain & Co. in Gurnee, IL and altogether practiced for 58 years. He served on numerous committees for the Illinois CPA Society and chaired the Local Government Committee of the Illinois CPA Society. After he sold his firm in 2017, he continued to do review work at his son, David Cain, Jr's, CPA firm in Villa Park IL.

He was a founding member of the First National Bank of McHenry; Lay Leader of the First United Methodist Church of McHenry; Elder of the First Presbyterian Church of Lake Forest, longtime member of a church men's group; President of the McHenry School District 15 school board; Alderman for the City of Lake Forest; Board President of The Grove School; Board President of McHenry Hospital during its transition to Northern Illinois Medical Center/Centegra, and treasurer of the Ralph Smith Foundation.

His favorite trip was to Normandy, and his favorite place was his Pistakee Lake house where he enjoyed his family and grandchildren, projects around the house, the views of the lake, and the peace and quiet!

David is survived by his wife of 57 years, Wyn; son, M. David Cain, Jr. (Donna) and their children, Theresa, Rachel, Deborah (Conner Houchin) Cain; daughter, Ann Rattin, Mark Rattin and their children, Benjamin and Daniel Rattin; and son, Joseph Cain, Marina Bianchi, their son Giacomo Cain and her daughter, Altea Bianchi-Bellfort; Dayna Shaw, Fiancé of Joseph; David is also survived by his brother Bryan; sisters-in-law: Margaret Cain, Miriam Simmons, and Donna Anding; nieces; nephews; the Donnell Family, the Stinespring Family and many other family, church and professional friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents Milburn and Katherine Cain, his brothers, Robert and James, his wife Sue (Stinespring), and his son, Gregory.

A Memorial Service is planned for Saturday, January 21, 2023 at 2:00 pm at the First Presbyterian Church of Lake Forest, IL. Dave served for many years in conducting the annual Township financial audits during my tenure as Marengo Township Supervisor. He was a very thorough and respected professional. I appreciated his knowledge and advice throughout our business relationship. Sincere sympathies to his family.
