Dear Linda & family,

I only recently found out about Tom's passing. I worked with Tom in the cardiac intensive care unit at St. Joe's for five years. I was in the Army for six years so Tom & I always spent hours talking whenever I worked the day shift. He was a wonderful man and a great and caring nurse. I will always miss him, but the time we spent together will always keep him living in my heart and mind. Rest In Peace my friend!

October 15, 2015

I only found out recently that our friend had passed away. Tom will always be a treasured gift to our family and we will never forget his loyalty and generosity. It was and always will be a great honor to call him a friend of our family. It is with a heavy heart that I express my deep gratitude to Linda and the kids for sharing your husband and father with us all.....he has left a permanent mark on our hearts.

Semper Fi, Marine! I will miss seeing you run carrying the flag. You were not only a patriot, but a South Saint Paul icon. I think multiple generations of us remember seeing you make the beat daily carrying the colors, and running all the way. Truly, it was an honor and a privilege to have known you.

Mrs.Schepers,
I am so sorry to hear of the passing of your husband. I remember growing up as a kid and seeing him running in the area holding his flag. I thought it was so cool and I would ask my parents to honk the horn and get so excited cause I knew who he was. I hope all the wonderful memories will help you and your family get through these next days, weeks and months. Sending my prayers. Love, Beth Leahy

Deepest sympathies to your family. Tom helped my brother, a fellow Marine /Corps Vietnam Veteran, when he was hospitalized at St Joseph's Hospital, giving me a list of names to call to assist him in every way in his battle with brain and lung cancer. My everlasting appreciation for Tom's instant interest and knowledge of the system. Bless your soul, Tom.

I was a paramedic at Divine Redeemer and I got to know Tom and a small bit of his story. Hero? You bet he was! His heroism in Vietnam goes without saying. As well though, he was an everyday hero to his patients, his family, and his friends. He eulogized my friend Mike Hall, a fellow Vietnam Veteran and unsung hero, and did a superb job. I'll never forget his eloquence. As a Vietnam-era veteran, I salute Tom. As a human being I long to emulate him.

So, so sorry for your loss. When I worked with Tom in ICU at St. Joes, he would always say "this man is a VIP" when one of our patients was a veteran. My Dad was a vet also and was fun to share stories with him. I miss him and his Marine coffee mug. Take care.

Dear Linda and family: our sincere sympathy to you all on your big loss. Our family have great respect and loved seeing him running thru South Saint Paul, carrying the USA flag, MIA and POW flags, as well. Not to mentioned, his beloved German shepard dog next to him. In a strange way, it gave us comfort seeing him doing this because he was a man that had to express himself in the best way he could and did! We both worked at Divine Redeemer Hospital; me in the lab and later, here at St Joe's Hospital. Always great seeing him at work or jogging/running. may God give you all peace and comfort. He is now resting with our lord.

January 9, 2014

Linda, our sincere sympathy goes out to you and your family. Tom's courage and love of country will keep us all aware of the deep commitment Tom had for the American Flag and what it means to us all. We all enjoyed Tom at our Polar Boy Luncheons, and will remember the stories, he told. We will be Honoring the veterans at our 50th Class reunion in August, Tom will be at the Top of the list! Dear Schepers Family,

You are in my thoughts and prayers. Tom was one of my dad's primary nurses in the St. Joseph's ICU during a several week stay in 2007 - 2008. He was wonderful to my dad - my dad always had great things to say about their conversations. I appreciated all the care and support that Tom gave to me and my family members. He was a wonderful caring nurse. I will never forget his compassion for his patients. My good memories bring you comfort as you adjust to his absence from this planet.

We are very sorry to hear about Tom's passing. Tom was an exemplary man. His courage and faithfulness to his country will never be forgotten. We will remember his funny Christmas cards, his great tour he gave us of your unique home, his passion for nursing and running, his gift of gab, his laughter, his smile, and his strong love for his family. We are blessed to have known him.

I am so sorry to hear of Tom's death. Tom and I worked in adjoining units at St. Joe's Hospital. He was so kind to our patients and could be so funny. His experiences in the Marines wove their way through his life. He once told me he had no idea what to do for a career after his Marine service. As he thought about it, he realized he had a lot of admiration for all the nurses and medics who had taken care of him when he was wounded so concluded that that would be a good thing to do. Tom was at or near the top of the seniority roster with all the double shifts he worked. Ask me or some of his other friends about the infamous triple shift when he was at Divine Redeemer. Tom worked hard so that St. Joe's might have a U.S. and POW/MIA flag on our campus where it can be seen from the freeway, and I'll always think of Tom when I see it waving in the breeze. Thanks, Tom, for being the kind and friendly person you were and are. I am so thankful to have had the chance to work with you.

January 8, 2014

Tom, You are gone from this earth, but you will never be forgotten. From 1970 at ASN to the last time I saw you running outside the Metrodome raising money for the Korean War Memorial, you were something really special. God bless your family and God bless your soul. W. C. Moore, Sgt, USMC

Thank you, Tom, for all you have done to serve our country and its veterans. You were an inspiration and a friend to every Minnesota Vietnam War veteran.

January 8, 2014

Tom Schepers was Real American Hero…. Tom, as some of you know, was a Vietnam Veteran that was so severely wounded in Combat, that they thought he would never walk…. Much less survive his wounds. Instead, Tom overcame his wounds to not only walk…. But, to RUN! He ran cross country for the both the Korean and World War II Memorials. While he was working at St. Joseph's Hospital, he would make the daily rounds of ALL the Veterans Memorials on the grounds of the Minnesota State Capitol. Everyday, between 4:30 and 5:30 PM, Tom would carry the American Flag and POW Flag and run to each Memorial to pay his respects…. A TRULY HERORIC TRIBUTE!!!
So many times, we take things for ‘granted'… Tom, like so many of our ‘quiet' Heroes --- has gone Home… to be with our other Fallen Heroes….
On behalf of the Department of Minnesota, VFW, we offer our Prayers to Tom's Family and we THANK YOU for allowing him to SERVE Our Nation and its Veterans.

Jim Hesselgrave, State VFW Adjutant Quartermaster
