DEAR SHERLEEN AND FAMILY
WE ARE SO SORRY FOR THE SORROW YOU ARE GOING THROUGH RIGHT NOW. WE BOTH HAVE BEEN THERE AND KNOW IT HURTS ALOT. AFTER WE MOVED TO THE BEACH I WAS AT YOUR MOTHER AND DADDY'S HOUSE EVERY DAY. YOUR MOM WOULD CALL ME AND SAY SHE HAD COOKED SOMETHING NEW AND GIL HAD A JOKE TO TELL AND OFF I WOULD GO. I SPENT LOTS OF HOURS OF FUN WITH THEM. THEY KIND OF TOOK ME UNDER THEIR WINGS SINCE MY MOTHER HAD JUST DIED. THEY WERE A GOD SEND TO ME. AFTER YOU MOM DIED AND I MOVED TO CALABASH WE LOST TOUCH WITH YOUR DAD AND WAS SO SORRY WHEN WE LEARNED HE HAD DIED. BUT HE IS BETTER OFF THAN WE ARE TODAY, HE HAS ALREADY GONE THROUGH WHAT WE STILL FACE AND HE IS AT REST IN HEAVEN. YOU CAN TAKE PLEASURE IN KNOWING THAT TO BE THE TRUTH. I TRUST THAT THE DAYS AHEAD WILL BE FULL OF GOOD MEMORIES TO CARRY YOU THROUGH. IT WAS A PLEASURE TO HAVE KNOWN BOTH OF YOUR PARENTS.

To Sherleen AND Tommy Burnette and the Family of Gil Sorah :
Sherleen and Tommy, I was really saddened by the news of hearing of the loss of Gil. With this being said I must tell you this story from long past. It was sometime during the cool brisk autum night of October, 1983 when I first met Gil and Dot Sorah. I had just started to work with the North Myrtle Beach City Police Department as a police officer. From time to time I would have Dot Sorah as one of my police dispatchers. I remember one night while on break I stopped
by the PD to chat with Dot and fellow dispatcher Steve Cox. After
about 2 minutes of chatting with Dot, here walked in Gil. Gil too worked with the NMB PD. Gil was a
reserve police officer that gave his time endlessly to the law enforcement community. When other full time officers were not availble you could always depend on Gil on being next to your side.
I won't ever forget "Ms. Dot" looking at me and saying, YOU'RE THE NEW OFFICER WHO'S FROM GREENSBORO,N.C.! Then Gil asked me if I knew his daughter and son in law Tommy Burnette. I won't ever forget the look that Gil and Dot had on their face when I told them that I had just spent the last 5 years as an active member of the Greensboro City Police Departments
Explorer Cadet Program and had just attended NC BLET with the High Point City Police Department.
They both immediately attempted to ask me if I knew Tommy Burnette.
My reply was, lord yes ! I've been out to ride with Tommy on numerous
occasions. From this day on forward, I felt as if I had brought my hometown of Greensboro
to Horry County, S.C. Not only did I work my regular shifts but I
often came back to ride with Gil.
Gil really had a certain style in
the way he handled each and every call for police assistance. Not to mention how "Ms. Dot" kept a constant check on him over the radio as she did all the officers. Several months after working with NMB PD I was on patrol in the Wendy Hill section of NMB when I came up on this VW with this subject crawling up towards the
interior of the rear window. I immediately called for back up.
I recall Gil being the first officer to arrive. After another officer arrived we attempted to remove the subject from the vehicle. I pulled from one end and Gil was pushing from the other end. Long story short as if I haven't written enough already, we got the subject out and soon realized that he was very much under the influence of something. After being transported to Grand Strand Hospital we were advised that the subject had overdosed on PCP ! I won't ever forget how Gil just jumped right in and begin
assisting me. I was 22 years old
at the time. Gil was about 35 years older and didn't even break a sweat at all. ! To have this
type of back up I will never forget. Over the years, it has been a great pleasure knowing and working with such fine folks as
Gil & Dot Sorah.

I worked with Gil and "Ms. Dot" at the North Myrtle Beach Police Department during the early 1980's. It was very obvious that these two people loved each other unconditionally. It was a sad day when these two were separated when Dot passed away unexpectedly. Now here we are again, another sad day for us who knew Gil. Knowing Gil was a man of God and loved his Lord and Savior with all his heart, it's certain that he is home in Glory Land with his love, Ms. Dot. God bless you Gil and thank you for taking me under your wing and leading me in the right direction when I began my career. You will be missed!

Spending time with Gil was a wonderful experience because of his attitude about life. His eyes reflected the joys that only Chirst could have put there.
There were two things you knew about him immediately - His love for Christ and his love for his daughters.
Some people walk in and out of your life, but he definitely left a footprint of love and joy.
Our prayers are with you at this time. Pat and Sam Austin
