Thomas Stampfl Obituary

Died at his home on November 2, 2005 at the age of 81 years. Resident of Fox Point. Beloved husband of 55 years of Barbara Stampfl (nee Sandrock). Loving father of Janet (Drew) Jaglom of Bronxville, NY and Barry (Celeste Cantu) Stampfl of Davis, CA. Proud grandfather of Peter S. and Wendy S. Jaglom and Jay and Jack Stampfl. Dear brother of Rosemary Stampfl of Las Vegas. Further survived by other relatives and dear friends.

Dr. Stampfl was a Professor of Psychology at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee for over 25 years and was the chair of its Department of Clinical Psychology. He had previously taught at John Carroll University where he earned his undergraduate degree. He earned his doctorate in psychology at Loyola University. In the 1950's Dr. Stampfl developed Implosive Therapy, a groundbreaking treatment of phobias, which was widely applied. He appeared on Walter Cronkite's television show "Twentieth Century" to discuss and demonstrate his work. He had published many articles on the subject. Dr. Stampfl had served his country in the 82nd Airborne as a paratrooper during WWII and had fought in the Battle of the Bulge for which he received a Presidential Citation. He was a man who wanted to make a true contribution to this world. He made his mark here and will be deeply missed by his family and all whose lives he touched.

Visitation will be held on Saturday, November 5, from 2:00 to 4:00 PM, at the Feerick Funeral Home followed by a service at 4:00.

Interment will be private for the family. Memorials in Dr. Stampfl's name may be made to the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, Psychology Clinic, c/o Dr. Douglas Woods, Pearse Hall Room #179, 2513 E. Hartford Ave., Milwaukee, WI 53211.
