Thomas Thaney Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers from Feb. 28 to Mar. 4, 2018.
Thaney, Thomas C. Tom died peacefully in the arms of the love of his life, Susan, surrounded by his adored daughter, Annaliese, and special niece, Jennine Willett-Millman. He fought a courageous battle with pancreatic cancer for the last 11 months while remaining positive and grateful for his extraordinary life and 34 year marriage. True soulmates, Tom and Sue shared a love for their Mission home, traveling, antiquing, classical music, theater, Blue Spring Lake, their church, good friends/family, and above all, being Anna's parents. Tom is survived by his siblings Elaine Schreiber (Marty), Lois Wagner, Claudia Thaney-Steadman (Patrick Guhin)and Susan's siblings Peter Klug (Ruth Paine) and Jane Besel (Michael), and his mother-in-law Ilse Klug. He is also survived by his precious "granddaughter" Marley Davis, many nieces, nephews and other relatives. He was preceded in death by his parents, Robert and Laura Thaney, his brother Bob Thaney and brother-in-law Bruce Wagner. All who knew Tom were positively impacted by his kindness, gentle spirit, generosity and creativity. A 50 year career as an educator/theater director reflected his passion and dedication to teaching, directing and inspiring students. Tom's reputation for excellence was far reaching . He was always modest about the many awards, achievements, and accolades received throughout his long career. To honor Tom's lifelong dedication and involvement in the Arts, a "Tom Thaney Fund for the Arts" for the youth at First Unitarian Society of Milwaukee (FUSM) will be established. In lieu of flowers, donations to this fund are appreciated. A service to celebrate Tom's life will be held at the First Unitarian Society of Milwaukee. A spring date is to be determined. Special thanks to Dr. Ben George and his team at the Froedtert Cancer Center, Horizon Hospice, all the friends/family who have lent their support in countless ways, (you know who you are!), especially Kristin, Marion and Sheila who never wavered in boosting spirits!

RIP Mr. Thaney. I remember him putting on great shows at BCHS. His lovely wife, Susan was my second grade teacher at Linfield Elementary. May you find peace and comfort with the Lord during this time.

My heart goes out to you, Susan, Anna and the whole family. Tom was a wonderful man and much loved teacher. His loving kindness and his warm heart guided everyone around him, students and strangers alike. I only knew him very briefly in person but I heard much about him from his students. I could see why they loved him so much. I am grateful to have met him and Susan.
May you be well and may your hearts heal.

Tom Thaney was one in a million. Everyone who ever knew him loved him as a friend. We met at Milwaukee Lutheran High School and then continued through college years and enjoyed so many fun times - on stage and off. And ever since those long ago days, whenever we would happen to run into each other, it was like no time had passed at all. He was genuine and caring and fun and talented and had a tremendous influence on the lives of so many students and adults too. He will be truly missed.
May God's love and peace hold you close and comfort your hearts and lives in the days and months and years to come.

Mr. Thaney was a wonderful teacher and so passionately invested in the success of his students. I am honored to have been one of those he taught and will always remember my time under his guidance in the BCHS Drama Club and so very many productions. May God bless and keep you, Mr. Thaney, and be ever with your family, as well.

I did not know Tom Thaney. He began teaching at Brookfield Central 20 years after I graduated. But I have learned much about him as the administrator of the Facebook group BCHS Lancers of '68 --In Memoriam where dozens of his former students and colleagues have posted memories and tributes to him. I know dozens of teachers, and have rarely seen anything like the outpouring of love for Tom Thaney. I have no way of contacting his family and I hope that this link to that group is appropriate so they might also see how so many view his incredible legacy. http://bit.ly/2FlzVbA Thank you.

I am sending prayers of comfort and peace to you Susan and Anna and all of the family. Tom was a very special, talented, humble man who inspired so many. I knew him when he taught in Brookfield and then when he became the theater director at Tosa East. God bless his memory.

Son, Christopher Lehman (class of 1998) was fortunate to have Tom Thaney as a teacher at Wis Hills Elementary and later blessed to be a student of his again when Tom was directing plays at Brookfield Central HS. What an experience for BCHS cast & crew to perform on the Pabst Theater Stage downtown. Tom was a kind hearted man who cared deeply for his students and was a wonderful role model. He shared his creativity, love for theater, and his talents generously with all his students. We send our deepest sympathy to Tom's family. The Lehman Family

I have such fond memories of Tom as a neighbor and friend. He was a great example of love and kindness to all who knew him. His integrity of character was his greatest attribute and his dedication as an educator his greatest accomplishment. A fond farewell my friend, see you in eternity. To Sue and family, blessings to you and may the peace of God be with you all.

No other teacher believed in me or encouraged me more than Mr. Thaney. He was a true inspiration, excellent director and was incredibly dedicated to seeing all of us involved in Brookfield Central's Drama Club succeed. Thank you Mr. Thaney, you will be missed.

To Susan and Annaliese:
We never met, but Tom made an indelible impression on me and helped shape me for the rest of my life. He was a wonderful teacher and found kids with developing talent (like me) and introduced them to the the magical world of theater and staging. It was in the mid-70s and I was in junior high at Wisconsin Hills and he staged the MOST inventive and ambitious shows--and picked me to lead them. I'm 58 years old and remember them all as if they were yesterday. I was Eliza in My Fair Lady, Marion in Music Man and Peppermint Patty in You're a Good Man Charlie Brown and those adventures with him sparked a lifetime passion in music and theater. He opened up the minds of kids and showed them the possibility in life (beyond sports!). I often tell people that directors/producers are the best coaches in the world and create teams often more significant than the sporting world. Your dad/husband did that and through my life I have never forgotten him. Know that his legacy lives on in so many lives he touched. I am so sorry for your loss--he was a gift from God.

To Sue and Anna plus all of Tom's wonderful family members, I would like to extend my deepest and most sincere sympathy on your loss of such a special man and friend/mentor to so many.

I worked with Tom at Tosa East H.S. and held him in such high regard for his numerous talents, his always present smile, his delightful sense of humor, plus his up-lifting attitude. I never missed any of the plays he directed; they were all such marvelous productions!

My husband and I moved to AZ one year ago ...
shortly after I accidentally ran into Tom and Sue;
our short visit truly made my day.

Rest in peace, Tom, and know you will be missed
by so many whose lives you've touched.

It has been my privilege to know and befriend Tom and his family since 1954, when we were neighbors at Blue Spring Lake. We became further connected by the marriage of his sister Lois to my late brother Bruce. His gentle sense of humor and benevolent instincts were accompanied by an appreciation of music and the arts, as well as a quiet confidence in his own ability to make personal contributions to both.

Tom was born into the memorable Thaney family, one having the very strongest bonds and mutual love, and he fully shared both. I am sure that his legacy will always be reflected in his family, students and friends. My wife and I offer our heartfelt condolences to them all.
