Thomas Michael Walter

March 24, 1949 - September 7, 2025

Thomas Michael Walter, age 76, of McHenry, Illinois, passed away peacefully at his home on September 7, 2025, with his wife and youngest son by his side.

Born in Oklahoma on March 24, 1949, to Eugene and Dorothy Walter, Tom's early life took him from Oklahoma to Ohio, and then to Arlington Heights, Illinois, where he played basketball in high school. He later spent many years in Texas before returning to Illinois, where he would spend much of his life.

Tom followed his father's passion into the oil industry, building a career that reflected his resourcefulness and determination. He worked for several companies over the years and even ran his own business for a time in Texas. A true "oil man," he had a gift for finding unique niches and closing deals. He loved the art of making a good deal, but even more, he loved people - colleagues, friends, and most of all, his family.

A lifelong Cubs fan, Tom also enjoyed a good basketball game and never turned down the chance to share in America's pastime, whether it was watching the Cubs or catching a Kane County Cougars game with his grandchildren. He loved a great steak (often three, if given the chance), was a skilled cook, and had a special joy in finding a good Costco bargain. Though he lived with diabetes for many years, Tom faced it with remarkable discipline and strength, always determined to keep living life to the fullest.

Tom was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather, and the proud patriarch of a family that was always at the center of his heart. He is survived by his loving wife, Ellen Michael; his five children, Brian (Dawn), Jill (Paul), Abbey (Richard), Brent (Elliott), and Max; his four grandchildren - soon to be five; and his brothers, Kim and Kerry Walter. He was deeply proud of his children and never missed an opportunity to brag about them, sharing their accomplishments with joy and pride. Known affectionately as the family's "baby whisperer," he had an unmatched ability to soothe even the fussiest child, a reflection of his gentle spirit.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Eugene and Dorothy Walter.

Those who knew Tom will remember him for his warmth, his laughter, and his natural gift for conversation. Whether talking business, sharing ideas, or simply striking up a chat with anyone nearby, he was never afraid to jump in and connect. He lived fully, loved deeply, and left a mark on all who had the privilege of knowing him.

A Memorial Mass will be held on Saturday, September 20, 2025, at St. Catherine of Sienna Church in West Dundee, Illinois. Visitation will begin at 10:00 a.m., followed by Mass at 11:00 a.m. A Celebration of Life will follow on Sunday, September 21, 2025, from 11:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. at 31 North Banquets & Catering in McHenry, Illinois.

Tom's legacy is one of love, hard work, and joy in life's simple treasures. He will be dearly missed, but his spirit will live on in the family and friends he cherished.
