TOM ZIERENBERG Obituary
Age 53, of Hampton Twp., unexpectedly, on Tues. Jan. 15, 2013. Beloved husband of 28 years to Cathleen A.; loving father of Jack and Kate; brother of Rick (Jill); son of Herbert and June Zierenberg. He also leaves behind many nieces, nephews, friends, and family. Tom will be missed dearly by his loving wife and caring children. "You'll Never Walk Alone" Visitation on Fri., 2-4 and 6-8 p.m at the THOMAS M. SMITH FUNERAL HOME & CREMATORY LTD., 930 Center Ave., Blawnox. A Funeral Mass will be held at St. Pio of Pietrelcina Parish, St. Edward Church, on Sat at 10:30.

Dear Family
Today I just learned of Tom's passing, it is sad and upsetting news to say the least and for you more so, we are so very sorry for you. I have known Tom for over 25 years both professionally and as a friend. When we were not talking about business, we talked golf or family. Tom was so very good at what he did and accomplished. We shared some good laughs and I will not forget that great smile. I am thankful to have known Tom, your husband and father.

At some point in our lives most of us have heard someone say "you look like you lost your best friend". Of course that is usually an exaggeration and most people wouldn't know how one should look or feel in that situation. Today however I know, because on January 15 I lost my best friend.
I remember being awakened on a summer morning many years ago to the sound of unfamiliar voices in my living room. I was 5 years old and the Salopek and Zierenberg kids had just moved into the neighborhood in which they would grow up. I was still in my pajamas and I crept down the stairs to see what was going on. As I peered around the corner I saw two strange boys sitting in my living room. Mrs. Zierenberg brought RIck and Tom to our home for a visit. Embarrassed because I was not dressed, I turned and ran back up the stairs but I was spotted. They chased me up to my room and there we introduced ourselves. We have been friends ever since. Because of that day I have been blessed to grow up with 3 brothers; my brother Dave and Rick and Tom Zierenberg.
Tom and I shared our childhood. We shared our high school days and our college years. And even though I have lived 1000 miles away in Louisiana for the past 30 years, we shared our adulthood. We got into trouble together, we shared tears and laughter, we shared weddings, funerals, childbirths and personal and professional milestones. We shared super bowls, world series, stanley cups and college national championships. He was my pipeline to Pittsburgh, always ready with information and news about sports teams, family members, friends and acquaintances. He kept me connected to my hometown and not a day goes by without some recollection of some event that involved Tom and I.
Through these years I have known Tom to be a kind, considerate and generous guy, occasionally a knucklehead but always a great friend. He was a loving husband and proud, proud father. Cathy, he spoke of you the same now as he did almost 30 years ago, his love for you was always tremendous. Jack and Kate, although I have lived away for all of your lifetimes I know you as if I have lived in Pittsburgh forever. I know you because of your dad who told me everything about the both of you from the day you were born, and with obvious pride and joy.
The last time I saw Tom was during these recent Christmas holidays. I came to his house where we talked, reminisced and laughed a lot. When I left we gave one another a big hug. Today I thank God for that moment. More importantly however I thank God for all of the days and years before when He allowed me to be a part of Tom's life. Those years in no small part helped shape who I am today and I will cherish them forever.
I will miss you Tom. But I will see you again when it's my turn. God Bless you, my friend.
