Tommie Martin Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jan. 7, 2025.
"Let not your heart be troubled; you believe in God, believe also in Me. In My Father's house are many mansions; if it were not so, I would have told you. John 14: 1-3

Tommie Deane Martin, age 86, went to be with the Lord, Friday, January 3rd, 2025. He was born in Duncan, Oklahoma on November 15th, 1938, to the late Amaretta Cecil Meazell and Thomas Alvis Martin. He was a loving son, husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather and a great friend.

As a young boy Tommie enjoyed playing marbles and skipping school to hang out with the old guys down at the local corner. Tommie played basketball for Duncan High School until he graduated in 1957. After High School he played basketball at Panhandle A&M College in Goodwill, Oklahoma. In 1959 Tommie moved to Odessa, Texas where he met and married Viola Lee Hayter. He worked at Rexene and El Paso Products for 30 years and was a faithful Mojo Football fan since the late 60's.

After retirement he moved to Del Rio, Texas where he owned and operated Vodie's Pet Shop and continued to pursue his love of fishing and gardening.

Upon returning to Odessa he fell in love again with Shirley, they enjoyed countless hours of watching more Mojo football and sitting in the backyard watching hummingbirds, bluejays and feeding stray cats, while listening to his favorite classical music. He had a passion for collecting Lionel trains and working on small engines.

Tommy is preceded in death by Viola Lee Martin and Shirley Ann Martin, his mother Amaretta Cecil Meazell and his father Thomas Alvis Martin.

Tommy is survived by his son Tommy Martin and wife Andrea, daughter Kimberly Lightfoot and husband Randy, daughter Amy Renee Walker and husband Kelly. Six grandchildren Mallori, Taylor, Shelby, Trent, Kirsten, and Dru and eight great-grandchildren.

If we live, we live for the Lord; and if we die, we die for the Lord. So, whether we live or die, we belong to the Lord. Romans 4:8.

Graveside services will be held at 2 pm, Wednesday, January 15, 2025 at Sunset Memorial Gardens in Odessa, Texas.

Arrangements are entrusted to Acres West Funeral Chapel and condolences may be sent to the family online at acreswestfuneral.com.

I came to know Mr. Martin through his postings on a Texas high school football message board. Although I never met him in person, he was one of the most popular posters on the forum. He continually showed his love, support and aspirations of everything Permian High School, as well as the city of Odessa . He will be sorely missed on the message board. RIP, Mr. Martin. May God bless your family & friends.

Another high school classmate gone. Until recently, he had been reading and responding to my comments on Facebook. God bless your sweet soul, Tommie! Rest in peace.

I worked with Tommie at Rexene Polyolefins in production from 1972-1976 until I transferred into the Maintenance Department. Tommie was quiet and friendly to everyone and I enjoyed meeting and working with him. He will be missed by many who worked with him.
