Tommie Russell Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Sep. 12, 2024.
We bid a colorful farewell to Tommie Av-Neail Russell, or as she was whimsically known, "Hippy Chick," who embarked on her grandest festival of all on September 6, 2024. At 61 years young, with a heart as vibrant as her favored tie-dye, Tommie took her final bow in Greenwood, SC, completing a journey that began on May 8, 1963, in Heidelberg, Germany.

Tommie is survived by her three brothers, Michael, Ronald, and John; three stepbrothers, Greg and Eric Hager, and Craig Self; her half-sister, Shannon; her stepfather, Dean; her three sons, Scott, Shaun, and Cody Chase; and her cherished grandchildren: grandsons Zackery Dodson and Mason Harrison, and granddaughters Mattalee Harrison, Destany Lipe, Brittney Butler, Nellie Butler, Kaylynn Butler, Hannah Butler, Julianna Cumber, and Jaden Cumber. She was preceded in death by her beloved grandparents, Estella and Thomas Russell, and John and Sarah Carpenter; her parents, Thomas J. Russell Jr. and Av-Neail Russell; her sister, Estella Jane (Susie) Russell; two brothers, Patrick Lee Russell and Thomas J. Russell III; her half-sister, Maureen; and her precious granddaughter, Bailee Rose. Tommie's legacy of love, strength, and family will forever be remembered by those who knew her.

Tommie's zest for life could only be matched by her love for elephants and her unyielding passion for attending festivals – the more psychedelic, the better! Adored by animals and cherished by her grandchildren, Tommie was the family's technicolor tapestry woven with stories of adventure and countless bear hugs.

A celebration that's sure to be more of a jubilee than a solemn gathering, will be held in Tommie's honor on Saturday, September 14th @ 4:00 pm at her beloved First Greenwood Associate Reformed Presbyterian Church, situated at 1635 Cokesbury Rd., Greenwood, SC 29646. In a fitting tribute to Tommie's "ele-fantastic" life, attendees are encouraged to don their grooviest tie-dye. Let's give a grand, grateful cheer for the woman who taught us that life, much like a vibrant tapestry, is best enjoyed in a brilliant array of colors.
