Tom Lee Harper, 72, Smithfield went home to be with the Lord on Saturday September 17, 2022 with his loved ones by his side after a brief illness. Tom was born in Charleston, Wv to the late Charles and Kathleen (Quinn) Harper. Tom is survived by his wife of 25 years, Shirlene Gray Harper; brothers, Leonard Harper (Tammy) and Mike Harper (Jan); sister-n-laws, Mary Harper and Juanita Harper; brother-n-law, Irvin Ordonia; and many nieces and nephews. Tom was also preceded in death by his sisters, Helen and Barbara; and brothers, Bobby Jo, Charles and Richard. After graduating from Sissionville High School, Tom volunteered for military service. He served proudly in the Army during the Vietnam era. Tom’s experience in the Army played a very important role in his life teaching the value of discipline and teamwork. Tom’s experience in the Army led to his career as a Crane Operator at NNS for 35 years. In his retirement years, Tom was active in serving the community and his church. He was a service officer and Jr. Vice Commander in the VFW Post 8545. Tom was known for generosity and sense of humor, he will be missed by all, but we know he is upstairs ushering in our Lords house. A Celebration of his Life will be held on Saturday, October, 1, 2022, 10 a.m. at Southside Vineyard Community Church, 13390 Great Spring Road, Smithfield, VA. Interment will take place at a later date at Albert G Horton Veterans Cemetery, Suffolk, VA. In lieu of flowers the family suggests memorial contributions be made Southside Vineyard Community Church, 13390 Great Spring Rd, Smithfield, VA or the VFW Post 8545, 223 Washington Street, Smithfield, VA 23430. Tom and I worked together quite a few years in the shipyard X 15 with the cranes. He was a good man and I enjoyed our time together he taught me a lot about crane rigging and crane operations. After he retired we stayed in contact with each other he will be truly missed.
