Trevor Payne Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on May 6, 2021.

Passed away peacefully away on Tuesday, May 4th, 2021, at the Health Science Complex, in St. John’s, NL, with his wife Olga of 38 years and son Gabriel at his side The Late Trevor Norman Payne at the age of 69 years.

Trevor was born and raised in Daniels Harbor, NL to a family of nine children and a large number of cousins. He married Olga nee Sheppard in 1983. Their son Gabriel and wife Kristie live in Wabush, Labrador and have to sons Liam and Griffin. Trevor has a daughter Heather who had been adopted out at birth. After many years of searching Trevor’s family was finally complete when we were reunited with Heather and our granddaughter Sophia. Heather lives in Bowling Green, Ohio. Trevor’s family was always his greatest pride and Joy. Also leaving to mourn are his siblings: Rowena (Bill), Jocelyn (Derek), Norma (Selby), Colin, Bryant (Rose), Shelia (Herman), Charlie (Janie), and David (Melina), his father-in-law; Cyril Sheppard, Trevor was predeceased by his parents; Elsie and Gorman Payne, and mother-in-law; Minnie Sheppard.

Trevor attended college in Corner Brook, NL, where he studied Industrial Maintenance. At age of 20 he went to work on his trade in Northern Manitoba. During the course of his mining career, he lived and worked at a number of mining operations across Canada such as the Nickle mines in Leaf Rapids, Manitoba, the Zinc mine in Daniel’s Hr, NL, the Zinc mine in Faro, Yukon, the copper mines in Colomac, N.W.T, and the Iron ore mines in Wabush, Labrador. Whether he was pulling wrenches as a mechanic or handling the maintenance activities as Superintendent he was very proud of his career and always proud of his team.

Trevor was always a big proponent of the Newfoundland outdoors. If it was rabbit catching during high school, salmon fishing in the summer, or moose hunting in the fall he embraced it all. He sometimes reminisced with friends about packing quarters of moose off Eastern Hills in the late sixties that weighed heavier than he did at the time. After moving to Faro, he added to those adventures and went hunting for Moose, Mountain sheep, and Grizzley in the Rocky Mountains.

It should be noted that during high school and throughout his early mining career he loved to play hockey on the side when time permitted. He always played hard and was scrappy and competitive. He relished this contact sport but when the game was over, he was quick to share a beer or offer a congratulatory handshake with his competitors. He took great pleasure in coaching junior hockey teams and more recently watching his grand kids play and improve on their hockey skills.

Since Trevor retired, he was most happy at his little paradise in Bills Woods. He was able to spend his summers and falls with his beloved brothers and sisters taking care of things and getting back to what he loved most; a quite morning in his shed listing to music, a day fishing or hunting and a day of beachcombing.

He was loved and admired by his grandchildren as well as his many nieces, and nephews. His many close friends and relatives will surely miss him.

The family would like to thank each and every one of you for the love we have been showered with this past few week, we will be forever grateful for our blessings.

The family will be having a private viewing at the Holy Cross Anglican Church in Daniel’s Hr, NL, and a private funeral service for the family and invited members and friends on Saturday, May 8th, 2021, at 2:00 pm, with Rev Terry Rose officiating, and keeping with Trevor’s wishes cremation to follow.

In lieu of flowers donations can be made to The Holy Cross Anglican Church in Daniel’s Hr, and or a charity of one’s choice in Trevor’s memory would be gratefully appreciated by the family.

We know that our grieving families still need to feel the same level of support from you their family, friends, loved ones and community. Please continue to pass along your condolences and reach out to them with warn thoughts and feelings. Instead of hugs and handshakes give messages by leaving condolences on our webpage @ www.parsonsfuneralhome.com  Send them a text, email, and even to call them personally.

The funeral arrangements have been entrusted to Parsons Funeral Home 63 North Main Street, Deer Lake, NL.

Please accept sincere condolences from my family and I. Trevor was one of the first people I met at the faro mill, he was extremely friendly and always ready to assist anyone new. Always good for a laugh and a bit of friendly tormenting. He was a great person to work with. I am sure he will be missed, take care.

Sending Olga and Trevor's Family my blessing. I wish you nothing but the best.
Trevor. I always taught of you as a friend and a good person. We spent a lot of time together. One whole year in trade school and stayed at the same boarding house. I spent a lot of time at your place when we were young. It was always a pleasure to visit there. What a great family.
Played a lot of hockey together and you played much the same way as I did. Loved the contact and the competition.

We would like to extend condolences to Olga, the Payne family and other friends of Trevor. We met Trevor and Olga through our friends, Roger and Daisy Taylor, and very quickly understood why they became such good friends. Although we only shared occasional visits Trevor went out of his way to make us feel welcome and included. He was such a great guy. A family man who was so kind, caring, friendly and fun loving. We feel blessed to have know Trevor and will miss him. Rest In Peace at your very special place, Bells Woods.

Thoughts prayers and hugs to Olga, Gabe, Kristy, Liam, Griffin, Heather and Sophia and the entire Payne and Sheppard families. We are richer and thankful for having Trevor in our lives.

The first time I saw Uncle Trevor I was a little girl. He was standing in Nan and Pop’s kitchen with long hair, a beard and overalls. But under all that hair was the most brilliant and radiant smile - and it’s that wonderful smile that remains in my memories of him today.

As the years pass, Uncle Trevor became so much more to me - and all our family. Simply put, he loved us all and we loved him. Our family has lost someone so special and each of us will feel that loss in so many different ways. Now is a time to remember how lucky we are to have had him in our lives and remember all the special things he means to us in our hearts.

Aunt Olga, Gabriel, Heather, Kristie, Liam, Griffin and Sophia please know that your families’ love will surround you now as you feel such loss.

Love Always

Olga, our condolences, thoughts and prayers are with you and all your family today.
Trevor has been a good and true friend. I valued our long chats and the time we’ve spent working together on his latest project. There were lots of laughs and jokes but also lots of serious conversation. He was a good listener.
I had strict orders to visit you guys in Daniel’s Harbour this summer and we were looking forward to it.
He will be missed. RIP my friend.

Olga, Gabriel & family

It is with the deepest sadness that we send our condolences to you for the loss of such a extraordinary man. Trevor was no doubt the most kind, caring & giving person that we were most honoured to call our friend.

We recall moving to the Yukon.. such a big move & so far away from home. Yet once we were welcomed into your home, we felt like we were home again. We instantly had the connection of love & friendship but mostly the love of family & friends.

There are simply not enough words that would express how much of a kind gentle soul Trevor had nor enough words that could express how much we cared for him.

We will forever be grateful to have known Trevor. We will forever remember him.

Olga & Gabriel, hold him close to your heart ❤ Until you meet again.

Much love

Trevor was a friendly easy going guy, as a mechanic who was called to the Tailings line to repair equipment, Trevor was a guy who never failed to show his appreciation for a job done. Aunt Olga, Gabriel and family, Heather and family, and the remaining 8 Payne Siblings,
We are so sorry for your loss. Theses past few weeks have been tragic and sudden. Last time our paths crossed was a birthday party for him in Bill's Woods in Sept 2018. I am sure he would have loved many more years to have enjoyed his retirement and life, and it really is hard to comprehend it all being taken away so suddenly. I hope one day you (and we) find some solace in his passing in remembering positive memories. Bill's Woods will not be the same without him there in the summers. Take Care. Godspeed Uncle Trevor. Say hi to Nan and Pop for us.

Love,
