Trudy Schafer Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers from Jun. 23 to Jul. 1, 2018.
June 20, 2018 Surrounded by family, Trudy Schafer passed away on June 20, 2018 from pancreatic cancer. A daughter in an Air Force family, Trudy grew up in many locations around the country. She received her BA from Northwestern University and a PhD in physical chemistry from the University of Chicago, where she was a Hertz Foundation Fellow. She was a postdoctoral fellow in chemistry at the University of California, Berkeley. Along the way she met and fell in love with John Schafer, whom she married on June 28, 1969. They moved in 1978 to Sacramento, where they raised their two children, Anne and Robert (Bob). Trudy enjoyed countless roles ranging from school computer docent to Brownie troop leader. The move also brought a change in career, when volunteer activity with the League of Women Voters (LWV) sparked an enthusiasm for public policy. Trudy served as president of the Sacramento County League before joining the state League's staff in 1992. For the next 25 years, she led the LWV California's advocacy and community education efforts. As Senior Director for Program, she oversaw a complex, multi-issue legislative agenda, lobbying at the state Capitol and leading on a number of ballot measure campaigns. She was a respected expert on dozens of issues including election and redistricting reform, limiting the influence of money in politics, and reforming the California budget process. She retired from the LWVC in late 2017. Numerous speakers at her retirement soiree praised her excellence in analyzing and presenting bills, and one lawmaker stated that he would withhold his decision on a bill until he had heard Trudy Schafer's opinion. Trudy is survived by her husband of 49 years, John Schafer, MD; daughter, Anne Schafer, MD (husband Michael Buckley, PhD, daughters Rachel and Laurel); son, Bob Schafer, PhD (wife Kristina Carbonell, JD); and sister, Vickie Domingo. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, July 7 at 11 a.m. at Trinity Episcopal Cathedral, 2620 Capitol Ave., Sacramento, CA 95816. In lieu of flowers, donations will be gratefully accepted by the Trudy Schafer Fellowship for Public Policy of the League of Women Voters of California (lwvc.org/schaferfellowship).

John and family, we just learned this morning of Trudy's passing. I had sent an email asking if she might be able to attend our class reunion at Northwestern this fall. After receiving no reply, I feared to look, and was very sad to read, this memorial. Although we only got together a couple of times over the years, I have fond memories and tremendous respect for Trudy's friendship in college and accomplishments in life. I treasure the memory of our meeting in Napa many years ago and had hoped to see you both again. Our deepest sympathies are with you and family.

Dear John, Ann, Bob and family,
We were so sorry to miss the celebration of wonderful Trudy, but we were out of town. One of our first and favorite 'finds' when moving to Sacramento over 30 years ago was the Schafer family. Bob and Kev loved to make potions and contemplate nature. My mom fell in love with Bob when he picked up the door mat, looked under and exclaimed with joy "Oh, German popup bugs!" We've looked ever since. And that memorable day, Ann, when you were watching the Ikemire's house and the water pipe broke in the bathroom. Somehow we managed to fix it and enjoy the indoor shower to boot. Over the years we loved running into any and all Schafers and Trudy became our personal political/policy guru, always leading with dignity, passion, truth and unbridled enthusiasm. I always felt better after a conversation with Trudy. She and all of you were a source of constant inspiration and joy for us Higgins. We treasured you then and now and hope her abiding joy and light will be a source of comfort to you all going forward. We're in Benicia now, loving it every day. Stop by when you're in the neighborhood. We'd love to see you.

My heart is saddened to read of Trudy's passing...I attended Radford and graduated with her in 1964. Trudy's kindness was a constant during those years of adjustment and trying to "fit in". She always made people feel that they were valued and worthy....she was the brightest scholar and Student Body President admired and respected for her ability to connect ..maybe a smile as you passed her between classes, or an assist with a complicated Algebra problem, always a team leader and mentor to all. Trudy thank you for your grace and dignity..and to your family..please know that Trudy made a difference in many lives..aloha dear sweet lady.

I am so saddened to hear of Trudy's death from pancreatic cancer. I went to our last 2 years of high school and graduated with her from Radford High School. I was able to visit with Trudy at our 50 year high school reunion and she was one of 2 there that I knew right away, her appearance hadn't changed that much as we aged. You are all in my prayers and am so glad someone shared the obituary to Facebook so I could learn more about her life after high school. Am sure she was very proud of all of you. Prayers for peace and strength in the days ahead.

Dearest John and Family; Our thoughts and prayers go out to you all. When my husband (Charlie) and Glens wife passed away we both found great comfort in reading Psalm 139:16."Your eyes saw my unformed body, All the days ordained for me were written in your book before one of them came to be." I thank you for the special moments we had together in your home at our Stroke Team Christmas Parties.

I saw Trudy's obituary in this morning's SacBee and, the moment I saw her picture, I knew she had to be a former classmate at Radford High School in Honolulu. She was a junior when I was a freshman and my sister was a senior. Although I had not seen Trudy since 1963, I remember her as being liked by everyone and as smart as a whip! My condolences to her family and friends, I am sure she will be missed by all.

To the family of Trudy, I send my Heart felt condolences. I haven't seen Trudy for awhile, I worked for CTA GR Department on 10th street and it was always a great pleasure to see Trudy come to the meetings. She always had a BIG smile, and was a very nice human being. She treated me like we had known each other all my LIFE. I was just the guy who sat at the front door, and she was always kind to me. I pray that God will bless her family! Memories are the gratitude of the Heart. She was a true LADY! God bless your family sincerely LaChester,
