Ugo Carpentieri M.D.,D.Sc. Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers from May 20 to Jul. 31, 2022.
Ugo Carpentieri, M.D., D.Sc., passed away peacefully, surrounded by his loving family, in his home in Portland, Oregon, on March 8, 2022.
Ugo was born on July 31, 1929, in Salerno, Italy, to Matteo and Ofelia (Budetta) Carpentieri and grew up in Castellammare de Stabia. He earned both a medical degree and a doctorate in biological sciences from the University of Napoli Federico II, School of Medicine and Surgery, in Naples, Italy, and then completed post-doctoral work in cell biology and biochemistry, a residency in pediatrics, and a fellowship in pediatric hematology/oncology at University of Texas Medical Branch (UTMB) School of Medicine in Galveston, Texas.
Dr. Carpentieri's illustrious medical career, from medical school and subsequent private practice in Italy, to academic medicine in Texas and Oregon, spanned over 50 years. In addition to superb patient care, his career included numerous research grants and scholarly publications; various awards for distinguished service and dedication to excellence in both patient care and teaching; and many significant and enduring contributions to the field of pediatric hematology. While at UTMB, Dr. Carpentieri also served as Professor of Hematology/Oncology, Department of Pediatrics, and as chair of numerous committees on pediatrics, pediatric hematology/oncology, and medical education. In 1994, he accepted a position at Oregon Health Sciences University, and then subsequently at Kaiser Permanente, and continued to practice clinical and academic medicine until he retired from medicine. During his retirement, he continued his academic journey by earning a bachelor's degree from Portland State University in 2005.
In addition to his distinguished career, Ugo will be fondly remembered as a loving and caring husband, father, and Nonno (grandfather), as well as a loving and caring brother, cousin, and uncle. We will all remember his witty "Dad" jokes; his love of ice cream and soccer; his enjoyment of classical music; and his life-long love of learning. Although he will be greatly missed, we celebrate his life and will cherish our memories of him.
Ugo was predeceased by his parents, and by his sister, Lucia (Carpentieri) Martone.
Ugo is survived his loving wife of 55 years, Sonia Carpentieri; daughter Sarah Carpentieri-Asbury (and husband James); son Stephen Carpentieri; and daughter Sandra Pullen (and husband Eric). He is also survived by his five grandchildren: Kennedi Carpentieri, Carter Carpentieri Asbury, Madeline Pullen, Carson Carpentieri Asbury, and Nathan Pullen. In addition, he is survived by nieces, cousins, extended family, and friends.
A celebration of life and a memorial service will be held at a later date. If you wish, memorial gifts in his memory may be made to St Jude Children's Hospital or The National Federation of the Blind. I loved going to his lectures at UTMB. His humor shown through and enabled medical students remember the importance of the subject of his lecture. I was snickering, trying not to laugh out loud when a student sitting next to me, thinking "Another boring lecture"asked me what was funny about the lecture. I told him that if he listened carefully, he'd hear two subjects.. the subject but also woven was Dr. Carpentieri's humor deliberately placed to help students recall that subject. I started hearing Snickers from him. After the lecture ended he stood and applauded! He turned to me and said how happy he was that he had sat next to me, that from that point on he'd always listen for the two subjects in Dr. C.'s lectures.

Dr. Carpentieri was always making me laugh; of the time his dry humor went over most sudents' heads. They looked over at me who was doubled over in laughter.

I was a medical social worker at UTMB in Galveston being assigned to Pedi. Hem/Onc. working with Dr. Carpentieri in the late 1980s. I loved his humor. My office was in the lab across from his office. He came in one day, put mice in a centrifuge for one of his many experiments. He looked over at me and said."They're going on a merry go round ride!" as he turned it on. I burst out laughing. I left UTMB to work at the Texas Dept. of Health and was very saddened to learn he hadn't been named department head. I loved how he cared for his patients. One teenage girl was very ill with a recurrent cancer. She was in PICU; her parents had gone for the Christmas holidays, but not Dr. Carpentieri. He stayed with her until she died later that n
