Ulysses Hines Sr.
FLORENCE — Funeral service for Mr. Ulysses Hines, Sr. will be conducted 11:30 A.M. Wednesday, November 7, 2007 at Mt. Zion A.M.E. Church, 1305 E. Cheves St., Florence. Interment will follow in Florence National Cemetery with Full Military Honors directed by Smith Funeral Home of Florence, LLC.
SFC Ulysses Hines, Sr. (USA Retired), a son of the late Albert B. and Hattie Addison Hines, Sr. was born in Florence, SC. He died on Friday, November 2, 2007 in a local nursing facility after an illness.
He was a graduate of Wilson High School Class of 1956. Mr. Hines was a member of Mt. Zion A.M.E. Church.
While employed with Boeing in San Diego, CA, Mr. Hines entered the U.S. Army where he served over twenty years. He served honorably and was awarded the Vietnam Cross of Gallantry W/Palm and Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal, Vietnam Service Medal W/3 Bronze Service Stars and a National Defense Service Medal. Mr. Hines retired from Palmetto Packaging Corp. in 1997 after 18 years of Service.
In 1956, Mr. Hines was united in marriage to his childhood sweetheart, Shirley Ann Brockington. This union was blessed with five children.
Survivors include his wife, Shirley Ann Hines; three daughters, Diana P. Hines of Dunwoody, GA, Debra Hines Brown of Decatur, GA and Darlene S. Hines of the home; two sons, Ulysses (Gertrude) Hines, Jr. of Stone Mountain, GA and Michael (Lisa) Hines, Sr. of Hartsville, SC; two granddaughters of whom he raised for several years, Dionne P. Hines of Atlanta, GA and April R. Hines of Stone Mountain, GA; ten grandchildren; eight great grandsons; three sisters, Mae Ella McClain, Rosa Lee Riley and Juanita Hines all of Florence, SC; four brothers, Leroy (Ruby) Hines, Sr. and Nathaniel (Annette) Hines, Sr. both of San Diego, CA, James (Bernice) Hines, Sr.of Chicago, IL and David Hines of Florence, SC; three sisters-in-law; three brothers-in-law; a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
The body will lie in state one hour prior to the funeral service. The family will receive friends at the home, 1004 Royal St., Florence.
