Valentine Judge Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on May 17, 2024.
Valentine Judge died peacefully surrounded by family on May 16, 2024 at Hospice of the Fisher Home in Amherst, Massachusetts. She waited until Spring was in full bloom before she took her exit to go and find Chloe.

Valentine Amy Ledger was born on August 15, 1950 in Boston to parents Winifred Hemenway and John Philip Ledger. She was the oldest of four girls and shared a birthday with her mother. She was in charge right from the start, a force of nature, and that never let up.

She grew up in Sudbury, Massachusetts surrounded by music and art. She was known for her red Honda 50 motorcycle and adventurous spirit. When she was 16, she traveled throughout Europe with a friend. After graduating from college, she began work at radio station WCRB in Boston where she met her future husband, Tony Judge. Valentine, Tony, and her daughter from a previous marriage, Vanessa, moved from Boston to Chicago. In Chicago, Valentine was the Manager of Advertising for the Chicago Cubs, and later an Assistant Commissioner for the Department of Cultural Affairs for the City of Chicago. She spent many years bringing art exhibitions around the world in partnership with the State Department. It was hard to name a place she had not visited.

She loved beautiful things, stone walls, french braids. She loved a good joke. She loved a well-cut suit on a man. She loved Cape Cod. She loved the sun. She loved fried clams but did not like bellies. She loved onion rings. Chocolate chip ice cream. She loved a marshmallow sundae. She hated eggs and whipped cream. She loved opera and The Talking Heads. Italian Vogue. She loved an event and was a fantastic hostess.

She loved her children.

She is predeceased by her daughter Chloe Judge. She is survived by her children Vanessa Regan, Phoebe Valentine Judge (Sara), Quentin Judge (Cayce), grandchildren Madeline Valentine Judge, Rhodes Judge and June Judge, sisters Phoebe Legere, Jane Jackson, Alison Fraser, her aunt Joyce Brown, cousins Elesse Brown and Anne Hemenway, and many loving nieces and nephews. A memorial service will be held on May 31st, 2024 at 11AM at The Wayside Inn in Sudbury, MA. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Hospice of the Fisher Home, 1165 North Pleasant Street Amherst, MA 01002.

I did not personally know Valentine, but I feel as though I met her through Phoebe´s lovely tribute episode and through her obituary. Both are so wonderfully put together. I know none of the Judges but hearing about Valentine´s life and death brought me to tears. I offer my condolences to all of Valentine´s loved ones. She sounds like an amazing, loving, funny, beautiful woman, inside and out. I think I would have loved to meet her.

It was great to "meet" Valentine on Phoebe's recent podcast episode. So sorry to hear she is no longer physically in the world.

I knew Valentine since the 4th grade in Sudbury, MA. She was an artistic and creative person. In grade school, she created a Medallion for Good Behavior awarded to me after being reprimanded by the teacher for acting up and then doing better. We saw each other our first year in college when she came to Colgate. Good memories. The world is better off that Valentine was in it. Rest in peace my friend. Daniel Durand

Valentine was an integral part of our Independence Park extended family. She used her talents for organizing neighborhood events and gardens in the park. Her door was always open for friends to drop in for stimulating conversation or a spontaneous party.

When Valentine wasn´t organizing events or hosting parties she was welcoming neighborhood children into her home for amateur archaeological digs in the crawl space under the house or tending to their needs as they stumbled into her kitchen in ice skates and wet clothes. My family and I have many fond memories that took place at her house on Dakin St.

It was an absolute pleasure to know Valentine. Sending our deepest condolences to the Judge family.

Val never shied away from an adventure...no fear! Somehow during high school, she & I got hold of a canoe, put it on a vehicle (??), and instead of going to school that day, drove it to the Concord River for a paddle! Seemed like the thing to do on a spring day! Good fun, no witnesses, no questions!
Toward the end of our undergrad years, she lived in a great place in Brookline and I was looking for an apartment, so since the upstairs apartment was in transition, in I moved, and lived until I got my first "real Job" teaching at Cape Cod Tech.
Some years later, Win and Phil bought their place in my town of Barnstable, so we'd see each other on her trips to their Cape home, and she came in for a random Lincoln/Sudbury Class of '68. A great spirit of adventure and appreciation for art, music, nature & beauty in any form. Having such spirit will transcend! Long will live her spirit, giving inspiration to so many!

May Valentine's memory be for a blessing, as it is said. And may all her family, but particularly her children and grandchildren, be comforted knowing that she died "peacefully surrounded by family."

Many obituaries on legacy. com fail to do justice to the man or woman being remembered, the failure often being a failure to capture the man or woman's individuality, a remembrance that does capture someone's individuality being one that identifies the particular attributes and qualities that made him or her loved and/admired.

The obituary here, the work, I suspect, of Phoebe, does do justice to Valentine in the sense described. This was not as difficult a task as it might seem however, because, in her best days, before ill health took its toll, her beauty, outer and inner, her loves and hates, more generally her vitality, were out front or otherwise manifest for all to see and value. As the obituary states: ""She loved fried clams but did not like bellies. She loved onion rings. Chocolate chip ice cream. She loved a marshmallow sundae. She hated eggs and whipped cream. She loved opera and The Talking Heads. Italian Vogue. She loved an event and was a fantastic hostess." And most all, she "loved her children."

Sheri and I extend our condolences to Valentine's entire family, but especially to her children and grandchildren.

My heartfelt sympathy to all of the family. Valentine was one of my best friends. My heart is broken. So happy we shared times at the Cape, and lunch with her sisters, and her mom, at the Wayside Inn. When I located her in Iowa, and found out the she was sick, there wasn't a day that passed, that I didn't think of her. High School family ski trips, and boating on our SEAMAID, are special memories. RIP dear friend, until we meet again. Forever in my heart,
Carolee

Vanessa and family, I´m sorry for your loss. I think the last time I saw Valentine was at Joel´s high school graduation at Rockefeller Chapel, which she attended with Madeline. Joel always enjoyed spending time with Valentine and your family.

I met Valentine over coffee at the Intercontinental Hotel before Joel was born. One favorite memory is when we met Valentine´s mom, Joel´s Mayflower descendant birth great grandma, at Bob Lehrer´s party when Joel was little. Joel later met Vanessa at another of Bob´s parties. Sending love to all of you.
