Valerie Bruneau Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers from Mar. 9 to Mar. 10, 2007.
BRUNEAU, Valerie Jane Valerie died in comfort and dignity at the Elisabeth Bruyere Palliative Care Center on Wednesday March 7, 2007, aged 71 years, Valerie Jane (nee Taylor) Bruneau (of Ottawa). Predeceased by her loving husband, Gaston. Much loved mother of Philippe (Karen) of Charlottetown, P.E.I., Lucie, Jacques (Colleen) and Jacqueline (Mark Dube), all of Ottawa. Loving grandmother of Marco, Genevieve, Dominique, Thierry, Alexandra, Natasha, Tristan, Jesse and Samuel. Valerie was an intelligent, compassionate woman who loved challenges and strongly supported the arts. Her career began at the Children's Aid Society, first as the Director of Public Relations for almost 19 years, and then as the Director of the Volunteer Bureau where she took a Christmas gift program from its infancy and grew it into a successful endeavor where 5000 families are helped each Christmas, in the 10 years she worked there. In 1998, she became a volunteer at the Ottawa Hospital where she visited patients and offered comfort and friendship. In 1999, her compassion and giving nature then steered her to the pastoral side where her strong faith further helped her to provide solace to those she visited. She served as President to the Friends of the Hospital Association from 2002 to 2005. She also volunteered at the National Arts Centre. Valerie was a woman of strong conviction and faith and was very involved in her parish. Thank you to Dr Legault, incredible nurses Peggy, Cynthia, Colleen, Francine, Chantal & Ian, supportive staff, Sylvain, Nadine, Josee, Diane and all the volunteers who showed Valerie kindness and compassion at Elisabeth Bruyere. Many thanks to Dr. Peter Cross, the staff at the General and the team at NOA (Civic Hospital). A Memorial Mass will be held at Notre Dame Cathedral, 385 Sussex Drive, Ottawa on Saturday March 10, 2007 at 1:30 p.m. Cremation. At Valerie's request, in lieu of flowers, a donation to the 5th Floor Homeproject, SCO Foundation PCU, 43 Bruyere St., Ottawa, K1N 5C8 or to the Shepherds of Good Hope would be greatly appreciated. To Valerie's family, we would like to express our deepest sympathy. We knew your Mom from her parish at St. Thomas d'Aquin, where we worked together and prayed together for over 30 years. As well, I, Dorothy, was the secretary at the lawyer's office when she and your Dad made their wills. In fact, that was where I met them. My husband, Edgar, and I will always remember her wonderful smile and her energy. She always had a kind word for everyone. We left the Ottawa area in 1999, and although we saw her once or twice since then, we had not seen her in the last few years. We had heard that she was ill, and she has been in our daily prayers since then.
We know you will miss her terribly, but at last she is together with your father in her eternal home.
Sincerely,
Edgar & Dorothy LeBlanc,
Moncton, NB

Jacqueline-- my deepest sympathy to you and your family. I had known your mother for a number of years -- going back to the days when she was at the Children's Aid Society. I was fortunate to reconnect with her through volunteer work at the Ottawa Hospital -- when she was president of Les Amis at the General Campus and I was president of the auxiliary at the Riverside Campus. We shared many interesting times -- banding together with our colleague from the Civic Campus to present a united front to hospital president & CEO Dr. Jack Kitts on a number of occasions on issues of mutual concern. I feel a personal sense of loss with her passing, but take comfort in knowing that she has gone to a better place -- she's probably already hard at work organizing a volunteer association up there.
