Verdene Sutton

Verdene Sutton, 92, of Mount Vernon died at 10:55 a.m. Wednesday, March 19, 2008, in Effingham. The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Logan Street Baptist Church, Mount Vernon, with the Rev. Wendell Garrison officiating. Interment will be in Mount Vernon Memorial Gardens, Woodlawn. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday at the church. Memorials may be given to Logan Street Baptist Church Missions and will be accepted at the funeral home or can be mailed to Hughey Funeral Home, P.O. Box 721, Mount Vernon, IL 62864. Online condolences can be made at www.hugheyfuneralhome1969.com. Mrs. Sutton was born Friday, Feb. 11, 1916, in Belle Prairie, Hamilton County, the daughter of Frank and Clare (Kennedy) Osborn. She married Joe Sutton March 14, 1937, and he preceded her in death May 29, 1985. Verdene worked with her husband in the poultry business, learned to sex baby chickens and did many of the hands-on things, as well as all the bookkeeping. She was executive and financial secretary for many of her husband’s companies. She was a member of Logan Street Baptist Church in Mount Vernon and served as treasurer of the church for over 30 years. She traveled extensively, both with her husband and alone. They lived in Liberia, Africa, for a year and she went on numerous world tours and attended international church meetings. Survivors include her daughters, Charlene Topel of Effingham and Janeta Sutton of Mount Vernon; three grandchildren, Ryan Topel and wife Debbi of Stillwater, Minn., Elizabeth Hughes and husband Robert of Chicago and Alexander Bartolomucci of Nashville, Ill.; and two great-granddaughters, Sydney and Morgan Topel of Stillwater, Minn. Her parents; husband; and brother, Denzil Osborn preceded her in death
