Vern Gosdin Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers from Apr. 30 to May 1, 2009.
GOSDIN, Vern Passed at midnight, April 28, 2009. He was 74. Known throughout the world simply as "The Voice", Vern has made his mark on country music in a way few others ever will. He started out in a small church in Woodland, AL, singing while his mother Zuma, played piano. He ended up in California in the 60's, partnered with his brother Rex, and singing bluegrass that quickly gave way to country rock. Disillusioned, he moved to Atlanta, running a glass business to live a "normal" life without music. But he kept a guitar in his company truck and before long, was singing in clubs, which lead to trips to Nashville, which lead his first demo. The rest is pure country history. He has hit the number 1 spot many times, over 20 top 10 hits, numerous gold records and a long list of awards. He's been nominated for a Grammy, a Dove and a Billboard award, as well as a few of the coveted CMA awards, of which he won Song of the Year for "Chiseled In Stone" in 1989. Though considered one of country music's best singers and songwriters, Vern has remained "under the radar", humble, and still writing songs up until his death. A funny, charismatic man who loved a good joke or prank, Vern was always the first to laugh. He continually wrote jokes and his friends continually told him not to give up his "day job". He sang "I know the written word won't follow me into the ground, so if I'm going to leave something behind, I'd better write it down" in "I'd Better Write It Down", written by Hank Cochran. Thank goodness he not only wrote it down, but sang it to last for eternity. He is survived by amazing fans; son, Steve; a grandson Tommy; and a host of close friends, including Mike Parsons, Truman Moore, Kelsie Maphet, Dawn Hall, Ann Street-Kavanagh, Pal, his dog and especially Katie, his special angel and the true love of his life. A public visitation will be Saturday from 12-4 p.m., at MOUNT OLIVET FUNERAL HOME, (615) 255-4193; Online guest book: www.mountolivet.com

To this day , Vern Gosdin is still one of my all time favorite singers and he always will be . The names Jones , Haggard , and Gosdin are the first names I associate with REAL Country Music .

As a young college student, I first heard Vern while watching an old Nashville t v show hosted by Tom T Hall I believe, Vern sang an early hit song , but it was truly his voice that just captivated me . Lots of hits followed this time period , but when a buddy of mine mentioned years later that his mother couldn´t stand to not hear a song even for a day , I had to find out what the song was . It was "Chiseled in stone " After I heard that one , I was hooked for good . I was fortunate to meet him at a show in Illinois with George Jones and Conway on the same venue . What a great memory that day will always be for me and my friend who went with me !

I loved Verns singing from the first time I heard it . The song “ What would your memory do “ was the song . Then I heard more and more . Chiseled in stone still sends chills up and down my spine . I was so thrilled to get to briefly meet him before a concert in Illinois with Jones and Conway . What a show that was in 1992 I do believe! Still miss that great humor as well as his singing . “Give me a tarot mater and onion “ was a great story on George’s t v show with Vern as guest ! Great memories forever a fan !

I saw. Vern Gosdin in concert in Peoria Il. and in Springfield Il. 1992 with Conway and George Jones . Vern came out in afternoon and wore black and shook hands with me and a buddy . The band was playing and then Jones boys also were practicing . We walked in back door and stayed all afternoon. Ron Gaddis , George’s lead gave us snickers and cokes . For 4 hours we watched and listened . All was way before 9/11 so Didn’t need security . What a time In Life that was . The music was priceless .
All 3 were great , and all on the same ticket ! Still have ticket stub ! Vern Gosdin great great voice !

Our thoughts & prayers are with the family, friends and anybody who knew and loved Vern. I have loved Country music ever since high school and now I'm passed 55 and I still love it today. But this new country is not country.
Vern knew how to sing, and write a good song. I have alot of his music, it never gets old, i hear it everyday. He had a beautiful voice. He will always be remembered. Another thing, my dad told me before he passed in '87 that we were related to Vern. He spoke about Aunt Josie often. They all grew up in Randolph Co. Ala. I am sorry i never got to meet him but i will one day.
He's singing in that Heavenly Choir along with Marty Robbins now.
I'll meet you "IN THE GARDEN" one day when I'm "CHISELED IN STONE".
"IT IS RAINING AT MY HOUSE TONIGHT"
Goodnight my brother, "I'LL FLY AWAY", one day.

Well Vern I guess you thought it was time to go,but the world of country music will have a void that know one can replace.Like George said "Who's Gonna Fill Your Shoes"?Idon't think there is another singer in country music that can ever have the feeling for a song that you had. Thanks for the music and I'm sure Jesus was holding your hand . God Bless you . A Fan Forever

In My Pocket

I have memories in my pocket.
They rattle among the change.

My memories of you are treasures I carry wherever I go.

They are stored in bits and pieces, parts of a beautiful whole
They give me comfort when I think I am alone.

Yes, I have memories in my pocket, like so much other stuff I keep there.

But of all the treasures I have, it’s the memories of you that are the most precious.

Doris Green Thompson And Taria Lee Green

This is a hard way of saying good bye. We have known you since Taria was 12 years old singing at the Nasville Palace, She is now 25 and still singing her heart out. You always believed in her.

You are now with your Pal Varney give him a hug for us. We will and do miss you both..Theres so much more I could say, But I can here you now saying to me, YOU WRITTING A BOOK PAL... LOL!! Yes Vern, this time I am...
Out of Love, honor & respect, we will miss you bunches, and Love you BUNCHES..Pal,you can sing to the heavens now and you are with your Lord as you know him.....Love You,MaMa monkey, & Little Money

I met and talked with Mr Gosdin's manager in Trussville Alabama one day a year or so ago. He was waiting for him to take him to lunch. My wife and I were shopping in the mall and decided to eat while there. Only a couple of tables away from us was Mr Gosdin and his manager having lunch.
I wanted to meet him and ask for his autograph but knew that was not the time or place. I didn't want to bother him.
A truly good man. Great singer. We will miss him.

"The Voice" was an accurate description of Vern Gosdin. I often felt he led the parade of unsung ballad singers. What a great singer, and gentle person. I lived in the Nashville area for 40 years and was fortunate to meet Vern several times. I have all his albums and they never grow old His music, and writing, will live forever. He now passes the torch to Gene Watson to lead the ballad singer's parade. My deepest sympathy to all of Mr. Gosdin's loving family.

Music, when soft voices die

Music, when soft voices die,
Vibrates in the memory—
Odours, when sweet violets sicken,
Live within the sense they quicken.

Rose leaves, when the rose is dead,
Are heaped for the beloved's bed;
And so thy thoughts, when thou art gone,
Love itself shall slumber on.

He sang of what he knew: Life... hard life; Hope... undying hope; and Love... eternal love. His sweet strains of harmony and heartache rates up there with the very best: George, Merle, and Lester. Oh, how I will always love Vern's singing. To hear him sing "Praying" or "I'm Gonna Be Movin'" from his Gospel Album is a piece of heaven on earth. With conviction, THE VOICE sang, "I'll Fly Away"... and now he has. Rest in God's Peace, my Brother.
