Verna Unrau Obituary

Published by Vancouver Sun on Jun. 24, 2006.
VERNA UNRAU 1945 - 2006 After a difficult struggle with cancer, Verna passed away peacefully at the Vancouver General Hospital on Thursday, June 15, 2006. Verna was born on August 24, 1945 in Southern Manitoba and grew up on the family farm in the rural area of Morden. She was predeceased by her mother Mary Unrau (nee Dueck) on March 2, 1980 and her father Peter Unrau on June 25, 1998. The eldest of nine children, Verna is survived by her stepmother Mary Unrau (nee Buhler), five brothers, Henry (Trina), Leonard (Jo Ann), Harvey, Irvin (Tammy), Albert (Heather) and three sisters, Mary, Anne (Clark Tauber), Alvina (Ernie Derksen) as well as numerous nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, and cousins. Verna will be deeply missed by her family, her many long-time friends, and also her co-workers at the Bank of Montreal where, after 25 years of dedicated employment with the bank, Verna retired in December, 2005. Verna loved to travel, walk, and read. For many years she gave her time as a volunteer for various fundraising activities for charitable organizations. With the assistance of Kearney Funeral Home, funeral services were held on June 20, 2006 at The Chapel at Minoru Park, with burial at the Gardens of Gethsemani in Surrey. A Celebration of Life service was also held in Morden on June 23, 2006 in her honour. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the BC Cancer Agency in Verna's memory, if desired. Verna will be missed in so many ways that words alone cannot even begin to express. She will be loved, remembered, and treasured in our thoughts and hearts forever.
