Vernice Johnson Gilchrist

Vernice J. Gilchrist NORFOLK - Vernice Johnson Gilchrist, 77, was called to her heavenly home Feb. 10, 2009. Mrs. Gilchrist was predeceased by her loving husband, John H. Gilchrist Sr. and her cherished sister, Florence J. Parker. She was the loving mother of two daughters, Phyllis Gilchrist Bolden and Terrianne Gilchrist and three sons, John H. Gilchrist Jr., Clifton J. Gilchrist Sr. and Eric K. Gilchrist. She is also survived by one sister, Naomi Chadwick; one brother, Wayman Johnson Jr.; seven grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews and other relatives. Born in South Norfolk, Virginia, she was educated in the South Norfolk public school system. Mrs. Gilchrist was a graduate of Providence High School and Norfolk State University. After 28 years of dedicated service, she retired from the U.S. Postal Service. A funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday in Mount Bethel Baptist Church, 4636 East Indian River Road, Virginia Beach, with Pastor A.D. Moore, officiating. Interment will be in Woodlawn Memorial Gardens, Norfolk. Family and friends will assemble at 6861 E. Tanners Creek Road, one hour prior to the service for the procession to the church.
