June 9, 1940 - September 26, 2015
Vernon Doyle Fewell passed on to heaven on Saturday, September 26, 2015 in Waco, Texas. A memorial service will be held from 12 p.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, November 21st at Texas Lutheran University, the Fritz Homestead, Seguin Texas. A time of Memorial, Remembrance, and Fellowship is to be shared by all.

Coach Fewell was born June 9, 1940 in San Antonio, Texas. to Herman and Edith Fewell, and had one brother, Bill Fewell.

Coach Fewell coached 40 plus years at high schools and universities all across Texas. Vernon loved coaching, coaches, and kids. One of Vernon's greatest joys was seeing young people enter into the coaching profession. Vernon's forte' was building programs from scratch, and turning around down programs. He relished the challenge, and it brought him great pleasure to bring kids, who had not had much success, the opportunity to succeed.

Vernon enjoyed other activities, as well, such as hunting, fishing, wood-working, pulling weeds and being around good friends.

Vernon was preceded in death by his first wife, Lonnie Fewell. He is survived by his wife, Mary Fewell of 22 years; children, Tracey Fewell, Marcey Fewell, son, Rex Fewell and wife, Wendy; stepsons, Courtney Bass and wife, Lori, Kevin and wife, Josey; several grandchildren; brother Bill Fewell and wife, Lynn; other relatives, and lots of very good friends and 'ole coaches.

The Fewell family would like to express their heartfelt gratitude to the staff at Westview Manor Nursing & Rehab Center in McGregor, Texas for the loving care provided to "Coach".

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Coach Fewell Fund, online, at tlu.edu, to the giving page, and note the comment section for the Coach Fewell Fund.

My dad touched, inspired and affected so many lives in a beautiful and powerful way. I witnessed it first hand as I followed him all over the football field, the gym, the campus or anywhere he went. He was my hero and it was no secret. Our family, the coaching profession in it's entirety, friends and former players/student athletes lost a loving, passionate and dedicated husband, father, coach, mentor and friend who will be celebrated, never forgotten and greatly missed.

Vernon was my brother-in-law. He was kind to me and will be missed. My mother, Jewell Hahn, gave him a nickname, "Ole Valdez" I think he liked it when she called him that because he would get this big grin on his face. I'm sure they are having a laugh or two.

He was a great Coach but more important he was a great human being. I had the pleasure of working with Vernon at Brackenridge High School. He was one heck of a person to have on your staff. He was extremely knowledgeable. He was my assistant in track and I was blessed for this. Vernon, I will miss you very much because I learned so much from you.
