I did not know Vern personally but I watched the Dateline special with my father and wanted to express our condolences. We are so sorry that this happened to Vern and can only imagine how painful it would be to lose a loving father, grandfather, etc under these circumstances. God bless

Vern sold us three homes. He also sold a home to my sister and brother-in-law and to our aunt where our mother also lived. It was the home in West Valley that we particularly loved because it was the last home when we were all together as a family before our children went away to college.
Vern was generous with his time. If I had any question about a home repair, he would suggest a professional I could call. He didn't drop us once the papers were signed.
He was also generous with his money. He supported my school projects including the buying of books for children in an after-school reading program. He donated dollars for fund raising projects at the local community college where I taught. He didn't tell me he would think about it and to call him back. He wrote out a check at that moment.
To help our family out, he was a pallbearer at our dear mother's funeral. Most of mom's contemporaries had already passed on.
Vern had the gift of energy. He loved to work and to play. Basketball was his passion, although he enjoyed baseball also. We attended basketball and baseball games with him.
Vern was a devoted family man: husband, father, and grandfather. He was the clasp on the chain that held the family together.
We wish the family our very best.

I met Vern 45 years ago and he rented me my first home as I started working for the Yakima YMCA. A year later he taught me how to buy my first home, and together we bought and sold many homes in the next 20 years. I learned much in the field of real estate from him, and he was a genius in the real estate profession. I have not seen Vern in 20 + years, but if I walked through the door and he was seated at his desk, he would have greeted me as if it was yesterday. My wife Sherry and I, were helped greatly by Vern when we returned to Yakima in 1981. I will always treasure his friendship. He was a great mentor and I will miss him greatly. May God bless his family and children and comfort them in this difficult time of great loss.

We met and knew Vern several years back through our friend, Bekah Tate-Cuevas (who loved Vern dearly and looked up to him not only as a business mentor, but also a father figure). Vern and Bekah assisted us with a couple real estate transactions. What struck me when I met Vern was he was one of the most vibrant, intelligent 75+ year old men I had ever met! He was a consummate gentleman, who many times met with us on weekends or late in the evening to get the job done. Such an incredible work ethic that you rarely see nowadays. Not many days have gone by these past eight months when I haven't thought about or prayed for Vern. I was sitting in a restaurant last Sunday evening with my 6-year old daughter Ava, when I happened to read about Vern's passing on my phone. She asked me 'Mommy, why do you look so sad'? I showed her Vern's picture and said 'this sweet man we knew passed away'. She looked at his picture and said 'Mom, he looks so nice, like a fun Grandpa'. I put my arm around her and said 'honey, he was a very wonderful man, and a Grandpa'. Then we cried together. God bless you Vern, and your family. You are now whole again, free of pain and no doubt soaring with the angels.
