Victoria DeVore Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Sep. 19, 2025.
Victoria Ann "Vicki" DeVore, 72, of Gardnerville passed away peacefully on September 17, 2025, in Reno, Nevada.

Born on January 31, 1953, in Toledo, Ohio to Robert DeVore and Mary DeVore, Vicki grew up with a passion for life and an innate drive to care for others. She graduated from the University of Kentucky in 1975 with a bachelor's degree in nursing. Her career spanned four decades, beginning in Dallas, Texas, and later continuing in San Francisco, California, where she moved with her best friend. Vicki found her professional home in the emergency department, where she was known as a compassionate caregiver and a respected colleague.

Vicki shared 44 wonderful years with Jeff Rice-the love of her life-and they were married for 34 of those years. Their bond was one of enduring love and partnership.

Vicki's dedication to helping others extended beyond her career. She lovingly cared for both of her parents, Robert and Mary, during their final years-a testament to her deep sense of family and responsibility.

A tremendous athlete from an early age, Vicki was a competitive swimmer who reached the pinnacle of her sport by competing in the 1968 Olympic Trials in the 200-meter individual medley. She finished fourth-just one place shy of qualifying for the Mexico City Olympics-but her achievement remained a source of pride throughout her life. Her love of swimming continued throughout her life, as she swam every day. Later, she channeled that same competitive spirit into golf. An avid golfer and active member of several women's golf clubs-including Genoa Lakes Ladies' Club, Eagle Valley Women's Club, and Silver Oak Women's Club-Vicki found joy on the fairways and greens.

Above all else, Vicki cherished her role as Nana. She adored her grandchildren and took immense pride in spoiling them with love and laughter. Her warmth extended to everyone she met; Vicki never met a stranger. With an uncanny ability to connect with people instantly, she brought humor, compassion, and light into every room she entered.

She is survived by her beloved husband Jeff Rice; daughters Sara Ruddy (John), Lisa Rice, and Amy Bove (Chris); brothers Rob DeVore, Mark DeVore (Carol), and David DeVore (Crista); as well as 5 grandchildren who brought endless joy to her life. She was preceded in death by her parents Robert and Mary.

A celebration of Vicki's life will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, please send a donation to the American Stroke Association to further honor the memory of Victoria A. DeVore.

To Rob and all the family of Vicki, I was saddened to read of Vicki´s passing. I was a member of the Mogan family who lived next-door to your family in Lincoln Village on Yarmouth Lane in Columbus, Ohio. You all were a big part of my teenage years there. I was on the Liveco swim team but not nearly as athletic in the sport as you were. Still, there are a lot of good memories. May Vicki rest in peace, and God´s blessings to you all.

Sending my love to Vicki`s family. For a time theDeVore family lived next-door to my family in Lincoln Village on Yarmouth Lane. That was when she was in her competitive swimming peak. I have fond memories of Vicki. May she rest in peace.

Knowing Vicki through golf was probably like knowing her in any endeavor. Always wearing her signature shorts regardless of the temps, she exuded a uniquely infectious humor. And if you were fortunate enough to be paired with her you were treated to her upbeat personality, as well as a cookie or two.
Absolutely the last person one expected to have a stroke, there must have been an urgent need for this wonderfully special lady to don her wings and spread her cheer in another sphere. But we'll sure miss her around here.

To all who knew her Vicki was a force of nature. We watched in amazement as she would swim and swim and keep swimming in the early mornings at Sand Harbor Beach of Lake Tahoe. She would come out of the water smiling with all of her heart and soul. Her joyful spirit was contagious and lifted all those around her. A gem of a human being and gone too soon Vicki will never be forgotten. Rest in peace my friend.

I am sad and a bit in shock at this news of Vicki's passing. I loved hanging out with Vicki even though it was only once a year in Tahoe, I always looked forward to hearing about the year. I would always check in with her a week or so before the Tahoe vacation that we all went on every year. Same week, same people same place every year Sand Harbor, NV. It was always fun connecting. I would check in to make sure she would be there so we could catch up on the beach. So many stories, so many laughs, tears shared from the last 30 or so years. We went river rafting once also during the summer with Lisa, we had so much fun! She was truly one of those people that everyone wanted to be around. I will miss you, but every summer when I swim out to the buoys at Sand Harbor I will be thinking of you. Ralph & AW will miss the hot dog & beers & cheers you so happily provided at the turn for the golf tournaments, but mostly we will miss YOU... Cheers and love, Kimmy, Ralph-A-Roo and AW.

I am grateful to had been able to reconnect with Vicky over the past few years via facebook. I was so excited when she moved to our neighborhood in 1963 as her reputation as an outstanding swimmer preceded her move. She was an inspiration her entire life in all of her pursuits. My deepest sympathy to her family during this time of loss.

Vicki will be so missed by so many people. I worked with Vicki in Lexington and then moved to Dallas a year after she did!! Vicki, Sarah Jane and I had some amazing times the 2 years we were roommates! I reconnected with her several years ago and it was like we saw each other everyday!! I also got to meet her Sara and saw how close they were!! I never met her grandchildren but as I followed Sara on FB I saw how much she loved them, and how much they loved her!! She was a special person. My heart is very heavy with this news.

Vicki was by far one of the best nurses at SFGH. Vicki always made everything better with her smile and high energy, no matter how bad the day seemed.
I loved watching her with her grandchildren thru her videos. So many hearts broken with this news.
