Shortly after moving to the area we met Coach Van while looking for the opportunity for our son to continue to play softball and as a family to continue to support Special Olympics. Van was an outstanding coach and we consider it an honor to have known him and a pleasure to have assisted working with him and the athletes of Virginia Beach Special Olympics.

We had the honor of meeting Van when we were new to the area (but not to Special Olympics). He was an exceptional fellow coach and inspiration to all Special Olympic athletes! He will be missed. May he Rest In Peace.

Psalm 90:10 says that the days of our years are 70 years, And if because of special mightiness they are 80 years.
May the memories of the wonderful times you shared together bring a smile and joy in your heart.

My memory of Van was that he helped me out in softball for Special Olympics. When I first started playing softball he always told me that I will always be his girl power and show other people how girls play softball. He was one of the best coaches that I know and he really cared for each and every single Special Olympian. He always hugs all the athletes and he will have a special place in my heart. He will be greatly missed but now he isn't suffering in anymore pain. This isn't a goodbye this is a saying see you soon. To the family always remember the happy times that you shared with him and there isn't a time limit on grieving. Just take it easy and always remember the happy times you had with him. I'm sending all of the family members a hug and everything will be fine. Thanks for letting Coach Van coach for Special Olympics. May he rest in peace and let the family find peace in his passing.
