Vincent Groves Obituary

Published by San Mateo County Times on Feb. 10, 2008.
VINCENT GEORGE GROVES March 27, 1927 - January 21, 2008 Vincent George Groves, 80, of Berkeley, California, died January 21, 2008 at an assisted living facility in Danville. Born March 27, 1927, Groves attended San Mateo High School. He joined the Merchant Marine at age 16 and sailed on cargo ships as an oiler plying the dangerous North Atlantic shipping routes during World War II, especially carrying supplies to the Russian port of Murmansk on the Arctic Ocean. After the war, he returned to the Bay Area to study math and play football at San Jose State College. Groves left California in the mid 1950s and attended the Pratt Institute in Brooklyn where he studied architecture. He also had a brief modeling career and was featured in Ebony Magazine and the Saturday Evening Post. Groves enjoyed the New York Bohemian scene in lower Manhattan in the late 1950s and early 1960s and was a coffee house regular. From New York he moved to Chicago to work with Byline Motion Picture Productions. While in Chicago he began a career as a sales representative for the beer industry, which he continued in Los Angeles with Lucky Lager and ABC Liquors. From 1968 to 1980 Groves was an AC Transit bus driver, and then worked in the company's general office until his retirement in 1997. During these years he was also a freelance photographer and many of his portraits of bus drivers and other company employees decorate the AC Transit general office building and the ATU #192 union hall. In addition to his local fame as a pastel portrait artist, he enjoyed flying private airplanes with his father-in-law Gerry Easterbrooks of Berkeley. Groves is survived by his wife, Joan Gwen Groves of Berkeley, daughters Anita Burton of San Francisco and Gina Lauderdale of Pasadena, sons Brigardo Groves of San Francisco and David Groves of San Mateo, stepdaughter Mona Rhinehardt of Virginia Beach, VA, and stepson Burt Tardy of Minnesota. A memorial service for Vincent Groves will be held at the ATU #192 union hall in Oakland, 8460 Enterprise Way, on Feb. 17 at 3 PM.

Vincent was half of a loving team that made up Joan (Joanie to me) and Vincent Groves with thier many Dog's as part of thier family. He was not only a wonderful artist he was a kind and loving husband to Joanie and a wonderful friend to many. I still have the photo he once took of me on Joanies back porch, I am not photogenic but some how he made me smile. He was a quiet spirit that will be missed. God Bless you Joanie and keep on traveling. I know Vincent would want you to be happy and keep movin on. With much Love to you my friend, Kim Roth'Terrell

I have fond memories of the day we all went sailing on a gray May day in Santa Barbara. We are all freezing but Vincent still took out his camera. Thank goodness he did, because I still have the 8 x 10 black and white photos he shot that day. Cherish your memories, Joan and God bless.

I will remember Vincent for the joy he brought to any occasion. The photos he took of our family at Joan and Sabrina's graduation are some of the best I have. He captured the beauty he saw in life so that others could hold it in their hands.

I remember with delight discussing M. Scott Peck and listening to his amusing stories about many things. I particularly appreciate his willingness to drive me home from their apartment and his love for animals. I will miss his laughter and warm heart.

I have known Vincent since he moved into the apartment building I manage. He was always happy, cheerful and had the gift of gab. We spent much time on the lobby bench or in his appartment, with a beer, talking about a wide range of topics. I had Vince make up a pastel of a friend's pets. Until then I didn't know what an accomplished artist he was. Very creative. I will miss Vincent and his smile around the building.

Vincent was a fine person who obviously loved doting on his wife as if she was the finest of porceline.

His enthusiasm, laughter and joy will be remembered, and missed.

What wonderful and interesting memories we will hold of Vincent. One memory I will always have is shopping with Joan and Vincent in a North Dakota grocery store and the two of them walking down every single isle in the store with Vincent describing to Joan what was on the shelves. Vincent was someone to notice and appreciate the finest of details and make sure that others had the chance to appreciate them as well. His enthusiasm was contagious!
