Vincent Schiavelli Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Dec. 26, 2005.
Vincent Schiavelli, the droopy-eyed character actor who appeared in scores of movies, including "One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest" and "Ghost," died Monday at his home in Sicily. He was 57. He died of lung cancer, said Salvatore Glorioso, mayor of Polizzi Generosa, the Sicilian village where Schiavelli resided. Schiavelli, whose gloomy look made him perfect to play creepy or eccentric characters, made appearances in some 150 film and television productions, according to the Internet Movie Database. In "Fast Times at Ridgemont High," he played the science teacher Mr. Vargas, who was married to the character portrayed by Lana Clarkson. (Rock producer Phil Spector is accused of killing Clarkson at his mansion in 2003.) Schiavelli also appeared as Salieri's valet in "Amadeus," as "Cuckoo's Nest" patient Frederickson, the subway ghost in "Ghost," the organ grinder in "Batman Returns," and as Chester in "The People vs. Larry Flynt." He was selected in 1997 by Vanity Fair as one of America's best character actors.

Schiavelli, who was born and raised in New York, studied acting at New York University's School of the Arts.

He also wrote three cookbooks and many food articles for magazines and newspapers, possibly inheriting his love for cooking from his grandfather, who had been a cook for an Italian baron before moving to the United States, according to IMDB.

"He was a great friend, a great chef and a great talker," Glorioso, who has known Schiavelli for almost four years, said in a telephone interview.

"With a smooth, witty conversation, he would make everything look more colorful. I've lost a brother," he said.

Schiavelli also had worked in Italy, including in 2001 when he directed a theater piece in Sicily based on nine fables.

A funeral service will be held Tuesday in Polizzi Generosa, Glorioso said.

I originally come from Brooklyn. Back around 1966, I was visiting friends in the Catskills when one evening we were just hanging around outdoors with a group of teens when this friendly, warm, engaging young man showed up and asked us all sit in a semi-circle and began entertaining us with improvisations of how different people behave when smoking pot. He was hilarious and had us all ROFL. He spoke to us as if we were old friends and he'd known us forever. He shared with us that he loved performing so much, he'd do it for free. Twenty years later, I recognized him in, "Amadeus" and told my husband, "I'm sure I've met that guy!" It was Vincent. I had no idea he'd "made it", but was happy for him. He was the kind of person who is instantly likeable. I still remember that night after all these years. RIP, Vincent. And thank you.

I joined the USMC in 1970 and one of the recruits I was barracked with looked exactly like him. He was only there for a week or two then disappeared. There was nothing said by the DI about it, but then years later I saw "One Flew Over The Cuckoos Nest" and by God I'd swear it was him !! My deepest condolences to his family and friends. His acting skills were immeasurable ! He had a special skill using the way he looked to bring out the best of the character he portrayed.

I grew up in the Bushwick section of Brooklyn & attended the same schools as Vincent, St Joseph's & Bishop Loughlin, but knew him only slightly, just to say hello. As a youngster, he played Cowboys & Indians on Cedar St. with my best friend James Gerardi. He always impressed me as being creative, non-conformist & a free spirit. I have an indelible memory of seeing Vinny bonding down the stairway at Bishop Loughlin, singing a Joan Baez anti-war protest song, an odd & inspiring sight for this kindred spirit. He had his first acting success at Loughlin in the title role as "the Man who came to Dinner", years before Cuckoo's Nest, Taxi, Ghost & many other great performances. Vincent was a true renaissance man: actor, author, chef. His excellent book "Bruculina, America" has become a family favorite (a great gift for any occassion). Recently I saw a wonderful documentary DVD about Vincent's retirement in Polizzi Generosa, Sicily, a beatiful town where my cousin Amedeo Aiosa was born & still visits regularly. The DVD was filmed probably a year or so before Vincent passed away, but he still has great wit, charm & joie de vivre. Respectfully, Richard Mangiaracina.

For Vincent...

WEEP NOT FOR ME

Do not weep for me when I no longer dwell among the wonders of the earth; for my larger self is free, and my soul rejoices on the other side of pain...on the other side of darkness.

Do not weep for me, for I am a ray of sunshine that touches your skin, a tropical breeze upon your face, the hush of joy within your heart and the innocence of babes in mothers arms.

I am the hope in a darkened night. And, in your hour of need, I will be there to comfort you. I will share your tears, your joys, your fears, your disappointments and your triumphs.

Do not weep for me, for I am cradled
in the arms of God. I walk with the angels, and hear the music beyond the stars.

Do not weep for me, for I am within you;
I am peace, love, I am a soft wind that caresses the flowers. I am the calm that follows a raging storm. I am an autumns leaf that floats among the garden of God, and I am pure white snow that softly falls upon your hand.

Do not weep for me, for I shall never die, as long as you remember me...
with a smile and a sigh.

I attended Bishop Loughlin with Vinnie. I have to tell those who aspire to be actors that Vinny didn't have it easy. When we attended the Christmas Plays at Loughlin, Vinnie got some "major" hoots. Yes, many cheered but Vinny overcame so many obstacles to have gone on to major accomplishments. That's what has to be told and remembered. Look at Vinny for inspiration and never, ever
feel you can't be successful!

One of my biggest regrets was missing the chance to meet you. I saw you walking down the street but I wasn't brave enough to approach you. I wish I could have given you a kiss and a hug and asked for your autograph but being a shy person, I let this chance slip through my fingers. I will always miss you. I will always love you. Rest in peace, gentle soul. xx

Vincent, you were a poet and artist at Bishop Loughlin High School, but most of us were too young and provincial to realize your talents. I devoured "Brucculinu",as it unleashed so many memories of our lost Brooklyn. The sights, sounds, traditions and, of course, the flavor of our Sicilian heritage in the "old neighborhood" came to life again. Thank you for that labor of love.

I remember meeting Vinny at his friend Mergie's house on Jamaica Avenue in 1965. He was always fun to be with, sincere and so intelligent. He would morph into characters in front of us and keep us entertained for hours. As I watched his career develop from the Christmas Tree ( which he would portray and entertain us with on the train to school) to a great actor, I always remebered fondly those young years and the impression Vinny made on all of us. Godspeed.

I first met Vinny (1966, I think) when the Dramatics Club girls from St Angela Hall went to Bishop Loughlin to help out with the play, "The Man Who Came To Dinner." Of course he had the lead. Even at age 18, we all saw his talent. A group of us travelled back and forth on the 'A' train after rehearsals. We were all together in the subway when New York City had that big blackout and we had to walk single file on the catwalk out into the night. (My mom came and drove everyone home.) I had the good fortune to be his date for Loughlin's Senior Prom and to be his friend. I was a Sophmore and Vinny was the first boy I had ever dated. He would sing folk songs on a guitar, smoke his pipe and filled a book with beautiful poetry. He was always calm, gentlemanly, fun, enchanting and interesting. He had that gift of letting people know that what they said was important to him. He helped me write a Speech on 'The Most Vexing Problem Facing the Next President of the United States' for the VFW. It was my first, last and only Speech but i WON a HUGE trophy. I ran into him in Soho not too long after he did that little supermarket cashier spot in Barbra Streisand's 1974 movie "For Pete's Sake' If you blinked you missed him but I knew it was Vinny and I was not surprised. When I told him I had seen him, he told me that he could live for six months on what he had made. (We were hippies then and could live on almost nothing anyway.) I remember he had absolutely the most beautiful, blond Swedish girl I had ever seen hanging on his arm. After that, I followed his career like everyone else and have always been very proud of him. It's been 40 years now and Vinny's the kind of person that stays in your heart always. I was happy to learn of his marriage to Carol and I know their years together were magical. His family and children will always be proud of him as Vinny IS truly a 'Great Man'. He is well loved and fondly remembered by everyone whose life he touched.

I met Vincent Schiavelli about 1965 at a basement party at the home his Bishop Loughlin classmate, Eddie Ciaccio. Vinnie arrived wearing a large black, wide-brimmed hat and a black cape, much like the “Phantom of the Opera”, but without the mask! His personality dominated the room. Once I met him I could never forget him.

In 1971 Eddie told me Vinnie had a part in the “Corner Bar” TV program. Several years later I saw him walking down Liberty Avenue in Richmond Hill, Queens, NY , with a few friends. I didn’t want to speak to them because he was a TV and movie actor and might not want to be bothered by his “public”. I always regretted not saying hello.

Whenever I saw Vinnie on the big or little screen, I would tell others that I knew the name of that actor, who was a friend of a friend of mine. My wife and children soon knew who he was. They would tell me whenever they saw Vinnie on TV or in a movie.

While we had not spoken since that party in 1965, I always felt he was a small part of my life. Now he is gone. So long Vinnie!

Dear Family and Friends: He may be gone, but he will never be forgotten. I had the great pleasure of meeting Mr. Schiavelli on two occasions; one in Houston where he was one of the honored guests at a fashion show hosted by the Towering Texans of Houston and I one of the awe-struck models; and the very next year again in Huntington Beach, CA where he was one of the fabulous judges for the Miss Tall International Pageant in 1998. I am delighted to have received his autograph. What a tremendous man - in so many diverse ways. He was always gracious and kind when we met. I aspire to be that kind of person and to leave a legacy as he has left. May God's loving arms ever surround all of you and comfort you during this sad time. It's nice to know that now there will be no more pain and his body is perfect.

Vincent used to visit a neighbor of mine named Anise in the late 1970's in a small apartment complex in West Hollywood on Larrabee and Harratt Streets. They were dating. He later gave me a terrific recipe for a Lebonese dish he called "Lemon Chicken." Basically it was a whole chicken stuffed with a whole pierced lemon and green olives, cooked slowly so the meat absorbed the lemony-brine flavors. Thanks for that, Vincent. Sail away.
