Vincent Tonucci Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jul. 22, 2022.
Vincent J. Tonucci, age 72, former Connecticut 104th District State Representative, entered into eternal rest on July 19, 2022, at Griffin Hospital in Derby, with his caring family by his side. He was the loving and devoted husband of Cynthia (Cartenuto) Tonucci. Vinnie was born in Derby on March 2, 1950, son of the late Joseph P. and Burina Cammarata Tonucci. A resident of Derby, Vinnie worked as a real estate broker at Vin Tonucci Real Estate. He was a graduate of Shelton High School, class of 1968 and received his Bachelor and Master degrees from the University of Bridgeport. Before real estate, Vinnie began his career as a music teacher at Amity Junior High School in Bethany. He was the founder, lead singer and guitarist of the band "The Velvatones", playing at many weddings and other special events. Vinnie was elected as State Representative of the 104th District and very proudly served the people of Derby and Ansonia from 1986-2005. He was especially proud of sponsoring the bills "Call Before You Dig" and the Family Medical Leave Act, among many other bills that were enacted into law. Vinnie was very active over the years in many Valley clubs. He was a member of the Sons of Italy Valley Lodge, the Adriatic Marchegian Club, Central Subalpi Club, Derby Elks Club and Moose Club. Vinnie was an auxiliary member of the Catholic War Vets in Derby where he enjoyed volunteering. He was a Justice of the Peace and past member of the Derby Board of Alderman. In his earlier years, Vinnie practiced Taekwondo and taught private guitar lessons. He loved cooking, trading recipes and sharing delicious meals with family and friends. He graciously hosted parties and numerous political fundraisers at his home in Derby. Vinnie loved spending time with his wife, family and beloved Florida friends at his condo in Naples, FL. Most of all, Vinnie adored spending quality time with his two granddaughters, who were the light of his life. Vinnie will be lovingly missed by all. In addition to his wife Cindy, Vinnie leaves to cherish his memory, two loving daughters, Cara C. Tonucci of Shelton and Christa C. Tonucci of Derby, a sister Rosemarie Garceau (Jean-Paul) of Shelton, precious granddaughters, Teagan Rose and Alice Clare Keefe, a nephew, Paul Garceau of TX, a niece, Jennifer Dame (Jon) of New Hampshire, a great-nephew, Milo Garceau of TX, special Godson, Kevin P. Sharkey of Derby, an aunt, Michaelena Sampieri of Ansonia, cousin and "brother" Ron DeGregoria of Ansonia, several other cousins whom he loved dearly, two cherished friends, former Senator Gary Hale and former Representative Jack Betkoski, with whom he served in the legislature, and many other special friends. He was everyone's "cousin Vinnie." He was predeceased by his in-laws, Pat and Clarice Cartenuto. The family would like to thank Dr. Fred Browne and all the nurses and staff on one and two North for the exceptional care given to Vin during his eleven days at Griffin Hospital. Relatives and friends may greet the family and pay their respects on Sunday July 24, 2022, from 2:00-6:00 pm in the chapel of SPINELLI-RICCIUTI/BEDNAR-OSIECKI FUNERAL HOME, 62 Beaver Street in Ansonia. On Monday, all are invited to attend his Mass of Christian Burial, meeting directly, at 10:00 am at St Mary's Church, 212 Elizabeth Street in Derby. Interment will immediately follow in Mount Saint Peter Cemetery in Derby. Contributions in Vinnie's name may be made directly to https://www.lustgarten.org/, an organization that funds pancreatic cancer research. When Vinny was a kid I used to balance his checkbook. He lived next door to my aunt and all the girls were crazy about him. He grew to be a very substantial man will liked, important and kind.

Dear Cindy,

I was so saddened to learn about the passing of Vinny. I wish you as much peace as possible to bring you comfort and courage to face the life challenges that you are experiencing.

I have great memories of Vinny, and I know you have so many more. A long time ago, when we were young and interacting with each, you and Vinny offered me so many pleasurable moments that, although they were limited, they were also significant. Vinny and I went to school together, played sports together, played music together, and went to Italy together, all of which helped to shape who we were to become.

I know it has been a while since we were friends in living Shelton and Derby. However, since then, I became well-aware of Vinny’s significant contributions to his friends, family, and citizens of the Valley. Last night, my wife and I watched to movie, “Being the Ricardos.” I mentioned this, because a main them of in movie was about how husbands and wives (Lucille Ball and Desi Arnaz) form important bonds and partnerships that allow each other to be successful and how this relationship leads to having their success benefits others. Knowing you and Vinny, I’m confident that your partnership with Vinny contained this kind of relationship that was meaningful to yourselves and to others, and especially your family.

I hope you will have loving memories to hold in your heart, and that these memories will help you in the days ahead.

In deepest sympathy,

Joe Balog

I met Vinny in Florida when he came to the pool/canopy with 2 bags of cheese, crackers, pepperoni, and enough for all. I told him my name and thanked him for the treats. In a couple of days later, he came to the canopy again, with italian goodies, and a cheese, italian meat pie which he had made that morning. He sat at a table and immediately called for all to come and have some goodies. Paper plates, forks, etc. etc. the works and he called me by name to come also. I really would not have gone over to the table, because I really did not know him, aside from the other day meeting. How did he remember my name? Well when I sat near the table, we chatted about his beautiful wife Cindy, his daughters, and grandchildren, his political career and from then on, I was fortunate enough to be a friend of this very generous, kind, funny man. As folks came to the pool, everyone was invited to have some goodies and all knew his name. He was like a ray of sunshine coming to the pool/canopy area for all who came thru the gate. I then met him and Cindy in CT at his buddy Jack's summer picnic for the Florida/Connecticut friends. Need I say anymore? A wonderful man taken from his family too soon, but God had a different plan for him. When I look at the sky at night, I see the brightest star flickering and I know it is him waving to his pretty, kind and loving wife Cindy and family letting them know that he is in God's arms. Rest in Peace my friend... you are missed by all.

Cindy,
We were so sad to hear of Vinny’s passing. From the first time we met him in 1975 when The Velvetones played at our wedding, to the day he came to our house as our buyers’ Realator (he was amused to see his “Velvetones” business card on our refrigerator) to all his years as State Representative, Vinny was always one of the good guys! Our sincere condolences to you & your family.

Vincenzo to me. Vinnie was special: intelligent, humorous, caring, jovial, politically astute, and a gentleman.
He was a neighbor in Florida and it was always fun to drop in for a quick visit. But really, there was no such thing as a “quick visit”, especially if Cindy was elsewhere. He was always ready to enjoy food and drink along with conversation. We shared political opinions and general “state of the state” thoughts interjected with great story telling by Vinnie.
He loved his girls!
And grandchildren were the icing on the cake. This is the real tragedy, that his grandchildren are robbed of his presence. He will be missed.
A larger-than-life personality is gone.
R.I.P. Vincenzo !

Sincere condolences to Cynthia, Cara and Christa and the entire extended Tonucci Family on Vinnie's passing. He was a great person and did so much for all of us in his distinguished career in politics and his personal and professional life. He was smart, hard working, loyal and generous. He exemplified old fashioned values and stood for everything that is good in life. He was a wonderful role model for all of us. Although he is not with us physically he will always be with us in spirit and memory.
