Vincent Tuohy Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers from Jan. 20 to Jan. 22, 2023.
passed away January 18, 2023, at the age of 74. Beloved husband of Marion (nee Prokop); Loving father of Sean Tuohy, Faith Dunkel, Kevin Tuohy; Cherished grandfather of Sydney, Morgan, Quinn, Stella, and Jake; dear brother of Peggy Thivierge, Michael Tuohy (Patricia), and Patricia Hackett (Bob); Son of the late Michael and Kathleen (nee McNeela). Beloved uncle and cousin of many. Beloved by Marion's family. Dr. Tuohy attended Xaverian High School in Brooklyn New York and graduated from Fordham University. He received his Ph.D. for his transplantation immunology studies from the Department of Pathology at Downstate Medical Center, Brooklyn N.Y. He completed his post -graduate training with an appointment to Harvard Medical School at the Eunice Kennedy Shriver Center for Mental Retardation and was involved in multiple sclerosis (MS) research. He received the Harry Weaver Award from the National MS Society and the Peter W. Lambert Prize from the Society for Experimental Neuropathology. He joined the Cleveland Clinic in 1989 where he continued his MS research, focusing on central nervous system autoimmunity. This research facilitated his discovery of a novel cancer vaccination strategy for breast and ovarian cancer and he was the recipient of the F. Mason Sones Innovator of the Year award as well as the Excellence in Science Award from the Lerner Research Institute in 2010. He was passionate about his research and was grateful for his talented and dedicated laboratory staff, and the support he received from the Cleveland Clinic. He was the recipient of the Mort and Iris November Distinguished Chair in Innovative Breast Cancer Research in 2012. Dr. Tuohy was inspired by the many women and men in the breast cancer community who supported his research so fervently. He was amazed by their dedication and persistence and because of them, his work will continue. He leaves a lasting legacy of scientific discoveries and inspiration. When not writing scientific manuscripts, which was one of his passions and talents, Vince enjoyed sports. He abandoned all New York sports teams and became an avid Guardians, Cavaliers, and fair-weather Browns fan, and also became a fan of Cleveland. He loved horse-racing which was introduced to him as a child by his father. He was a generous soul, full of life, and will be greatly missed by his family, friends, and colleagues. Funeral services are private. A Celebration of Life will take place at a future date. In lieu of flowers, contributions in his memory to the Breast Cancer Vaccine https://my.clevelandclinic.org/giving/make-a-gift or St. Jude Children's Research Hospital would be appreciated.

Vince certainly was full of life, and ACCOMPLISHED many things. I will miss his sense of humor and friendship. Many times I have observed that with the success of his breast cancer research, he will have had a greater positive effect on more people's lives, than anyone else I know. What a legacy.

I remember a number of years ago doing my usual Sunday night routine of watching 60 minutes and up popped Vince being interviewed about his breast cancer vaccine work and Scott Pelley saying to him - you have given so many women hope and Vince responded " what would life be without hope." RIP Vince.

I am so very sorry to hear about Dr. Touhy's passing. I had read some of his earlier work and heard about the breast cancer vaccine trial he was conducting at CCF. I was fortunate to be a subject in the Phase IA vaccine trial and will be forever grateful to Dr. Touhy. His tireless work provides those of us with TNBC hope. Even with his passing, he is doing good for others.
Thank you, Dr. Touhy. Your work will allow so many others to live.

I'm so sorry to read about Dr Tuohy's passing. We exchanged emails regarding his research work but quickly diverged when he found out I lived in Ireland! I think he told me he had 64 cousins here!!
He told me of his wish to play baseball and do athletics (which didn't work out) and found it amusing that I was a professional musician as he said his own musical abilities were limited. He told me his real talent lay in science.
My sympathies to his family.
He was a lovely man, it shone through in his correspondance.
Thoughts and prayers at this difficult time x

I had the honor ofbeing called "FRIEND" by Vincent, or Vinny as I knew him years ago. He, Dr. David Fernandes kept me in shape by having me try to keep up with them jogging. And, when we finished our run each of us would take turns cooking for the three of us. When I discovered that he was doing Research at the Iconic Cleveland Clinic, I was burst with pride for him. I shared an occasional phone in the succeeding years. His visit to New York a few years ago he was a handsome man who was seeking political support for his research. I proudly wrote to every elected official that I knew. When Dr. Fernandes informed me of Vinny's passing I was stunned. The world lost a true Man for Humanity. In pure sadness, I remain Raffaello "Ralph" Perfetto

The students of CCLCM loved Dr. Tuohy for his passionate love of searching for new and better ways to help patients. They were inspired by him and encouraged to pursue their own research dreams, no matter how long or frustrating the path. He always pointed to the light ahead and enjoyed the journey. Thank you for sharing him with the school, his colleagues, patients who benefited and the world. He left the world a better place. Kathy Franco

My father had a compelling presence. He was intelligent, passionate, and charismatic. Just about everyone who has known him has a memorable story about him. He relished in getting people not only to think but to expand in their thinking. I am enormously proud of his scientific discoveries and his far-reaching impact on others.

As his daughter, I didn’t have to be physically near to him to be with him. He was always with me. We had many conversations that lasted for hours. I am grateful for the multitude of lessons he has taught me throughout my life. I love him so much.

Sydney, Morgan and Quinn have known the softest side of their Grandpa Vince. They loved when he was silly with them on video calls, when he performed magic tricks for them, when he told funny stories. He was a generous and loving presence in their lives.

We wish for peace for him, now and forever. We will miss him dearly.

I am so sorry to hear of this sad news and express deepest sympathy to family and close friends of Dr. Vince Tuohy. I worked with him extensively when the breast cancer vaccine concept was in preparation for FDA submission. His passion, knowledge, willingness to be inclusive, and hope for the future of patients was palpable and refreshing. I feel so fortunate that we crossed paths in his mission to prevent breast cancer, especially the most lethal type. After our weekly logistical planning meetings with other members of the cancer center and breast center, we would frequently talk informally about the lab, funding, clinical trials and his vision for the future, always well based in sound science that only his brilliant mind could have conceived. I feel blessed to have known this great man. This picture includes members of Dr. Tuohy’s lab, as well as nurses and staff from the Cleveland Clinic Breast Center. We all believe in his cause and in him. Sincerely, Joanne Lyons, RN

I attended Xaverian HS with Vince and had many memories. We shared many a bus ride on the M-9 bus enroute to XHS for four years. He always sat in the back of the bus with his horned rim glasses and smiled at me as I got on the bus. We shared many of the classes together at XHS. I last saw him at our 50th class reunion in 2015. We recognized each other immediately even though he no longer wore those glasses. My heart goes out to your family in these sad times.

I went to Xaverian H.S. with Vinny, '65. Ran track with him, played school-yard ball with him. Saw him at our 50th H.S. reunion in 2015. Was not surprised to see how successful he became. Such fond memories. Society loses when such a talented man leaves us. Thanks for your friendship, Vinny.

To the Tuohy family, I'm very sorry to hear of your loss. I was a room mate with Sean for quite a number of years and he came to visit several times. Even after all these years I clearly recognize his picture and have fond memories of him as he hung out with the guys... What I also remember was that he talked about Sean and his sister Faith a lot, obviously a proud father. I knew he was a bright mind in the medical field but didn't know how much so at the time, nor did I know what he would go on to accomplish. Quite an impressive and amazing career as I read the recap. It's a strange thing what you remember after so much time about someone, he obviously made an impression on me, and I wanted to offer my condolences. Best thoughts and prayers during this difficult time.

My Beloved Father, Grandpa Vince to his grandchildren and "just call me Vince" to his friends:
Dad, you were not just an amazing Father & wonderful role model, but you are my inspiration and my hero! You believed in me when no one else did and you saved me from a downward spiral of sure destruction. I have lost the single closest person to me ever in my life, my best man, my best friend, the kindest, most brilliant, generous, colorful, wise and charismatic man I have ever had the privilege to know, let alone be his son. I am so proud to be your son and I am truly blessed to have had you as my Father! This is a tremendous loss. I've never felt grief of this magnitude. I can't believe I can never call you again to hear your soothing words. You always had all the answers and I will pass this wisdom onto my children. You will live on for as long as your amazing contributions to humanity echo into the future, saving countless lives! Thank you for being there for me, Dad. I love you and I will treasure all of the wonderful memories. I hope you were wrong about the afterlife and I hope you've passed on to another existence in a better place where we may one day meet again!

It is with great sadness that I heard this news. My heart, thoughts, and prayers are with my friend, Marion, and with their family. Vince's contributions to this world have been amazing and will save the lives of countless individuals. His innovative discoveries and his tenacity to pursue them have changed the world of cancer prevention. Although he was taken too early, he contributed significantly to the betterment our world, which is a great thing.
