Virgil Hahn Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Feb. 20, 2018.
A funeral service for Virgil Lee Hahn, Sr. age 83, of Tyler, is scheduled for 2:00pm in the afternoon Wednesday, February 21, 2018 at Pollard United Methodist Church in Tyler. Rev. Stephen Rhodes and Rev. Richard Luna will be officiating. Graveside services are to be announced for Highview Cemetery, Chaplain, KY next to his son.

Virgil Lee Hahn, Sr. 83, was born December 16, 1934, to Virgil Dutch and Catherine Hahn of Chaplain, Kentucky and died with his family by his side on February 17, 2018.

He attended Bloomfield High School in Bloomfield, Kentucky. Virgil continued his education at Lindsey-Wilson College in Columbia, KY. He enjoyed playing on the basketball team, earning two letters.

Ann Louise Shields met Virgil her freshman year in high school in 1947 and they married September 23, 1955. They relocated their small band minus one to Tyler, Texas when Virgil took a new job with Copes Vulcan of Lake City, PA

Virgil was the Scoutmaster of Troop 84, Henderson, KY, and Troop 369, Tyler, TX. He was also the Committee Chairman in Tyler, as well as a Brotherhood Member of the Order of the Arrow. Virgil earned his Wood Badge at Philmont Scout Ranch, New Mexico and a Silver Beaver award (a council level distinguished service award of the Boy Scouts of America). The award is given to those who implement the Scouting program and perform community service through hard work, self-sacrifice, dedication and many years of service. Virgil's son Allen and grandsons Corey, Norman and Tyler are all Eagle Scouts.

Virgil and Ann enjoyed going fishing. They spent many a day on Lake Tyler chasing their quarry and would share their bounty of crappie once a year at their annual Epworth Class fish fry. On that day the class would grow 200% in size as word spread of the event in which Virgil selflessly fried several pounds of fish, fries and hushpuppies to all in attendance. In his retirement, he, Ann and their cat (Miss Kitty - Named after the saloon owner in Gunsmoke) toured the United States, and Canada in their 5th wheel.

Virgil was active in Pollard United Methodist Church in many roles. Virgil was on the Wednesday Work-crew, a maintenance team of volunteers that shared their unique expertise in keeping the church operational, as well as serving as a regular usher.

Virgil was preceded in death by his parents and a son Norman Shields Hahn. He is survived by his wife of 63 years Ann Louise, his four children and six grandchildren: Virgil Lee Hahn, Jr. (Benita), Katherine Hahn-Girouard (Dwight "Hap"), Roy T. Hahn (Vicki), Allen G. Hahn,

Grandchildren: Bethany Hahn-Crenshaw (Ken), Corey Hahn, Norman Hahn, Kim Benson (Kyle) Andrew Hahn, Tyler Hahn and Kaylee Hahn, three Great-grand Children Beaux, and Izabela Benson, Jacob Hahn and his sister Judith Ray Hahn of Bardstown, KY.

The family wishes to express its profound gratitude to Virgil's loving caregivers Mary Lane and Kendra Black.

I trained with Virgil for a few months in Rockdale, TX as a new field servive engineer for Copes Vulcan in 1980. We had dinner one night at the motel restaurant with a guy who was a POW as a Marine during the Korean conflict and he told us a hilarious story of a trick they pulled on their guards.

We think of Virgil often, remembering the good times we had together, his sense of humor. He will never be forgotten.

We all know that the first thing Virgil did when he got to the gates of heaven was to take a look around and see just what "needed fixin'". Always the true handyman, heaven will never have anything in disrepair with Virgil around. Virgil always treated his extended Louisiana friends like family. Love & prayers to all of the Hahn family.
